Blending NO. 1 Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil
NO. 1 is truly evocative at this time of the year and that is something that we can highlight, or mute, to suit our needs. The balance of this fragrance oil is pretty tough because of some strong scent notes and it will withstand some interesting combinations. This fragrance oil is perfect for beginners to experiment with.
Top Notes
The top notes of No. 1 Apple Cinnamon Fragrance oil are the sharp green tang of Apple and the fresh zesty of Orange. This gives us plenty of alternatives to play with.
Ramp up the fruit notes in a variety of ways:
- Stick to autumnal fruits, such as apples, pears, plums, figs, grapes, and quinces.
- Highlight the Orange notes with Mandarin, Tangerine, and Sweet Orange.
- Lift the top notes even higher with more citrus-like Lime, Lemon, and Grapefruit.
- NO. 1 Apple Cinnamon Fragrance oil will also mix well with tropical notes like Coconut, Pineapple and Mango
Adding florals is quite a challenge but you could try adding ones you might use if you were baking: Lavender and Chamomile for example.
Again, green notes can be tricky to add into this space but a dash of both Peppermint and Spearmint wouldn’t go amiss to lighten and brighten it.
Recap of Suggestions For Essential Oils
- Sweet Orange, Tangerine, and Mandarin add zingy warmth, while Lime and Pink Grapefruit elevate the whole profile.
- Lavender and Roman Chamomile can add a herbal and floral note and just a dash of Peppermint and Spearmint to brighten things up in the top notes.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Add creamy warmth and a tropical twist with NO. 27 - Coconut Cream and NO. 18 - Caribbean Breeze.
- Add notes of sugared Plums and the soft aroma of Violets to complement the Apples with NO. 2201 - Inspired by: Cheirosa 59 by Sol De Janeiro.
Heart Notes
The tantalizing heart note of NO. 1 Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil is made up of Cinnamon Sugar.
We can play on those mouthwatering aspects and plump for food and drink-based aromas:
- Strong Black Tea notes, mild Coffee tones, and rich creamy Chocolate, all work well with this fragrance oil.
- Matching it with Milk and Cream aromas works beautifully.. Effectively, it’s just like pouring cream over an Apple Pie and adds to the lushness and ups the sensation of luxury.
- We can add notes of Marshmallow, Honey, and Maple Syrup to make it sweeter.
- Spice it up more and ramp the heat off the chart. Try adding Ginger, Cardamom or Cassia.
Again, adding florals presents us with a little challenge and we need to consider the scent profile as a whole when discerning which floral aromas will create harmonizing accords.
- If you added Lavender in the top notes consider adding Rose Geranium to perfectly complement and balance it. Though Rose Geranium will happily work on its own here.
- If you add tropical fruits and aromas, plump for a dash of Jasmine just to round out the heart. Gardenia is another alternative.
Recap of Suggestions for Essential Oils
- Rose Geranium perfectly complements the apple. I make Rose Geranium and Apple Jelly and it’s a sublime aromatic combination.
- Jasmine will complement tropical notes like Pineapple and Coconut.
- Raise the heat a little, with Cardamom, Ginger Root (Dried), and Nutmeg.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Round out the heart notes with floral scent profiles like NO. 38 - Gardenia.
- Add notes of Marshmallow, Honey, and Coffee with NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro and add the creamy nutty profile of NO. 2210 - Inspired by: Brazilian Bum Bum by Sol De Janeiro to add more dimension and luxury.
Base Notes
The base notes anchor this scent profile beautifully and are an interesting mix of spice, wood, and earthy notes run through with ribbons of creamy Vanilla.
You have the deep strong Clove note melding with Nutmeg’s warmth to add extra depth and dimension.
The light Sandalwood tones of Amyris dance with the evocative earthiness of Patchouli which almost gives you the sense of the roots of the woody apple tree, sunk down into the earth.
Then you have the soft, smooth, creamy ribbons of Vanilla running through it all and holding it together.
So where do you go?
How about doubling down on those strong spices with Cinnamon, Clove, or Star Anise? Or you could do the same with the Vanilla and an extra layer of luxury. If you want to go full Vanilla luxury, try the Oleoresin (essential oil) for the most sublime aroma. You won’t be able to get enough of it!
Vetiver would add to the earthy aspects and bring a slightly different dimension without upsetting the balance.
Alcohol and burnt sugar notes also work really well here, try Maple Syrup, Bourbon, and Rum.
I’d steer clear from adding in new woods unless you stick with a light Sandalwood aroma. They could be a tad overwhelming.
Recap of Essential Oil Recommendations
- Star Anise and Cinnamon Bark will double down on those spices.
- Try Vanilla Oleoresin to introduce that uber-luxe aroma that exudes reassuring comfort and soothes us like nothing else can.
- Vetiver will add earthy aspects and deepen the whole profile.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Add notes of alcohol with NO. 45 - Kentucky Bourbon and the sweet rum notes in NO. 52 - Maple Syrup.
- NO. 22 - Christmas Splendor is full of those luscious deep spice notes.

Professional Blending Techniques
Just a few easy industry hints and tips can make all the difference and have you blending like a professional in no time.
The Scent Profile Balance
Defining and maintaining the overall balance of your scent profile is key to your blending success. However, it is also something that needs to be worked on and comes with practice and experience. Please be patient and kind to yourself if you are just starting out.
Like NO. 1, many fragrance oils are balanced in the heart notes, but the base notes also help to anchor this with the variety of aromas used. However, it is not always the case that the balance sits in the heart notes, so don’t fall into that presumption.
Get your fragrance and always sit for a minute and assess the fragrance. Try to define and discern where its balance point lies. Where is it sitting in the notes?
What Creates The Balance?
As soon as you discern where the balance sits in the scent profile, you can move to the next important question.
‘What is creating this balance’? Can you discern which elements are creating it or do you feel it is just an amalgamation of them all? I can’t teach you this, this is something you need to work on for yourself.
The next key question becomes - ‘How can I introduce new harmonizing accords and maintain that balance’? Your success lies in these tiny aromatic spaces. You will soon learn to define and maintain that all-important balance and create harmonizing accords to create bespoke blends.
Never lose sight of the fact, balance is key to creating successful and sensational blends.
Patience
Now, this is where I dispense wisdom based on experience. Patience is your best friend here.
The world of fragrance should be relished and it is a place where the pace of life should be turned down a few notches and you can completely immerse yourself in the process.
It will help you foster patience and start a habit of working just a couple of drops at a time. A couple of drops - stop - mix - test, and so on in tiny steps until you reach the perfect balance.
When you work in this disciplined manner it makes it hard to go wrong. This way, you avoid making those expensive mistakes, (like I did). Turn this way of working into standard practice, irrespective of whether you use precious, rare and expensive essential oils or wildly abundant and cost-effective ones.
Scent Strips
We also need to standardize how we evaluate our blends, regardless of the cost and rarity of our essential and fragrance oils. Scent strips are extremely cost-effective and a useful evaluation tool.
You get a much better idea about the developing scent when you get the fragrance out of the bowl/bottle and into the air. You want it to react with the oxygen and other air elements to give you a better idea of how it will react in your Diffuser Blends, or a Reed Diffuser, for example.
It does not take long to appreciate the noticeable difference a scent strip makes and beginners will find them a boon in evaluating fragrances to get a more accurate assessment of the developing scent. This is another tip that helps you avoid making expensive mistakes.
Take A Break
When you work with fragrance, always carve some rest time out too, as you need regular breaks.
It is the brain that processes the aromas traveling up from our nose, but after a while, it can get lazy and will stop doing its job so effectively. Your brain simply stops processing the scents. This is what we call going ‘nose blind’.
Avoid nose blindness by:
- Taking a ten-minute break every twenty minutes or so.
- Get some fresh air, if you can, and help your brain reset.
- When you work with intoxicating, heady, or narcotic essential oils, take regular breaks.
You lose the ability to evaluate your scent properly, or effectively when you go nose blind. Mitigate that by taking regular breaks.
NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon Blending Framework
NO. 1 offers you a heartwarming and memory-evoking aroma full of tantalizing and mouthwatering accords. It is easy to blend with other essential oils and fragrance oils, making it a good place for beginners to start.
The seasoned blenders can challenge themselves by adding florals and green notes. How can you introduce a floral heart and create a green freshness in the top notes without losing the mouthwatering effect?
It will always work well with other food and drink aromas and you can play on a variety of different aspects in that genre. These are just suggestions, so have fun exploring, building your blending skills and creating your own bespoke diffuser blends.

Follow This Blending Framework:
Top Notes
Fresh green Apples and zesty Oranges bring fruity freshness to the top notes. Try and maintain that lovely crisp, fresh introduction. Go one of these ways:
- Autumn Fruits: Stick with autumn fruit aromas like Pears, Figs, Grapes and Plums.
- Citrus: Introduce more of those orange citrus notes to add warmth, try Mandarin, Sweet Orange, and Tangerine. Elevate with the sharpness of Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon and Lime.
- Tropical Fruit: Nudge it towards the more tropical side with Pineapple and Coconut accords.
- Floral: Challenge yourself by adding the perfect balance of Lavender or Roman Chamomile.
- Green: Uplift the introduction with fresh green scents like Peppermint, Spearmint, and Dwarf Pine but keep them to a minimum.
Heart Notes
The heart space is a mouthwatering combination of Cinnamon Sugar, which we can add to with both spice and food and drink-based aromas.
The braves amongst you can build on creating the floral notes.
- Floral - NO. 1 needs judicious blending with floral scents. Try lighter and brighter with Rose Geranium or go tropical with Jasmine.
- Food and Drink: Introduce mouthwatering accords with Black Tea, Coffee, and Chocolate. Introduce creamy sensations with Milk and Cream. Add sweetness with Marshmallows, Maple Syrup, and Honey.
- Spice - Notch the heat up with extra spice. Try the comforting warmth of Ginger and Nutmeg, and the fruity tones of Cardamom, and Cassia for its Cinnamon aromas.
Base Notes
The base notes are varied and complex and create the anchor for this fragrance so we don’t need to go too wild here.
- Spice: You can afford to go as warm and as deep as you dare here. There’s more than enough room for it. Try the heady depths of Star Anise, Cinnamon Bark, and Clove Bud
- Woods: Stick to the lighter aroma of Amyris or go deep with Sandalwood.
- Earthy: Vetiver and Patchouli can ramp up that autumnal earthiness that we know and love.
- Food and Drink: Add a drop of alcohol with notes of Rum or a smokey Bourbon. Burnt Sugar works really well here too, as does a rich caramel.
Diffuser Blends With NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon
IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends
Diffuser Blends fall into IFRA Category 12, NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon fragrance oil, in this particular category, carries no safety restrictions.
Method:
- Carefully measure out your fragrance oils and/or essential oils into a small measuring jug.
- Mix them all together, until thoroughly combined.
- Keep the bottle oil-free and as clean as possible, use a funnel to help you. It will help you label to stick better later.
- Decant your diffuser blend, using the funnel, into a 10ml dropper bottle.
- Use a good-quality silicone spatula to help you get every last drop of precious oil into the bottle.
- Good labeling is crucial. Your bottles contain undiluted oil and present a significant safety hazard, therefore, you must label them clearly.
- Annotate the label as ‘UNDILUTED’, for obvious safety reasons.
- Clearly list all of the ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
- Date your label, adding a 12-month expiry date as well.
How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:
- Please consult your manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance on your individual diffusers.
- Again, consult your manufacturer's individual instructions as to whether to dilute your blends.
- For more general advice on using fragrance oils in different types of diffusers check out our How To Use Vinevida Oils article.

Fabulous Autumnal Recipes With NO. 1
NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon is such an evocative fragrance oil that will perform beautifully across a wide variety of applications.
I wanted to demonstrate some of this diversity by doing two very different, but complementary, recipes that can be used in conjunction with one another.
Let’s create a pleasing little combo for your home, a natural-based Household Surface Cleanser and a matching Room Spray to keep your home clean and smelling fresh and inviting with the tantalizing aroma of autumn.
Natural Household Surface Cleanser
Everyone I know seems to be making clear and definite shifts toward reducing unnecessary and potentially toxic chemicals from their home cleaning routines. Whether that means choosing more eco-friendly products or making their own, it seems to be all the rage.
Don’t get left behind, learn to make your own right now. It’s so easy and the ingredients are super simple!
IFRA Safety
NO. 1 in IFRA Category 10A has maximum safety restrictions of 5.15%. This means that in 100ml of Household Surface Cleanser, you can only use up to 5.15ml of NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.
You can use the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes.
You Will Need:
- Measuring jug
- Bottle funnel
- Stainless steel spoon
- 1-liter spray bottle
- Oil and waterproof label
Household Surface Cleanser Ingredients:
- 850 ml of Boiled or distilled water (Aqua)

- Use a little more and allow it to soak for a few moments on stubborn stains and burn on food.
- No need to rinse from surfaces. Let the essential oils do their job on pesky microbes and unseen bacteria.
- Always wash your hands after use.
Room Spray
NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon is perfect for comforting Room Sprays with its evocative fragrance and we can ramp up the feeling of autumn in several ways! I’ll show you how you can swap and change this to suit your mood.
The biggest issue people come across making their own Room Sprays is having oils floating on the surface of the spray leaving globs of oil behind and the water turning green with algae growth. A dispersant helps the oils to integrate into the water and a preservative will stop it from turning green. Find out more in Crafting the Perfect Scent: Your Guide to Room Spray with Fragrance Oils
IFRA Safety
Room Spray
NO. 1 in IFRA Category 10B has maximum safety restrictions of 18.94%.
This means that in 100ml of Room Spray, you can only use up to 18.94ml of NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.
You can use the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes in the same category.
You will need:
- Measuring jug
- Bottle funnel
- Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
- Oil and waterproof label
- 200ml spray bottle
Ingredients:
- 175 ml of Distilled Water (Aqua)
- 10 ml of Polysorbate 20 (Sorbitan Monolaurate)

- 60 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus Limon L (Burm.) F. )
- 20 drops of Nutmeg Essential Oil (Myristica Fragrans)
- 20 drops of Vanilla Essential Oil (Vanilla Planifolia)
Alternative Fragrance Oils
Simply swap out NO. 1115 for up to 5ml of ONE of the following Soaps & Candles fragrance oils: (They all have maximum safety dilution rates of more than 5% and you don’t need any more than 5 ml in 200 ml of product!)
Method:
- This is very easy to do at home for yourself.
- If you choose to use a preservative, follow your individual manufacturer's instructions for how much to use and note when in the process of adding it.
- Into the measuring jug, measure out your Distilled Water.
- Add the Preservative and Dispersant and combine well.
- Add the Soaps & Candles fragrance oils and essential oils and mix everything together.
- Now you need to check the oils have fully dispersed and that no oils are floating to the top. If there are floating oils, try adding a bit more dispersant and give it a mix until the oils disappear.
- Use a funnel to help keep your bottle clean and decant into your spray bottle.
- Add the spray nozzle to the bottle and cap tightly.
- Clearly list all of the ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
- Shake the bottle well”
- “Do not spray near the face and eyes
How to use:
- As an oil-based product, always do a patch test in an inconspicuous place on precious fabrics and surfaces before using. You don’t want oil droplets on your fabrics.
- Shake the bottle well before use to make sure everything is evenly dispersed, it should be anyway but double-check no blobs of oils are floating at the top. (If they are, you need more dispersant, add it now).
- Check before you spray, the way the nozzle is facing, don’t spray it toward your face. Or anyone else's for that matter!
- Do not spray Room Spray towards your pets or animals and we also advise that you avoid spraying the areas where they rest or sleep.
Safety:
- Always be sure to spray away from the face and body.
- Do not spray near animals or their bedding.
- If you get any onto your skin, wash off immediately with soapy water.
- If the spray gets into your eyes, rinse with clean tepid water.
- If any irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled container with you.
Protect Surfaces and Furnishings From Fragrance Oil
