There are three different mandarin oils, red, green and yellow mandarin essential oil. The essential oil comes from the rind of the fruit.
Mandarin essential oil originated in China, and was originally grown only for royalty. A mandarin fruit requires a huge amount of nourishment to mature, so ensure that the fruit can get that, the tree is pared down to throw away more than half the fruit.
Rather than these being wasted, essential oil is made from the peel.
Green mandarin is the youngest, then the fruit turns yellow and finally it goes to orange. So the most mature is red mandarin essential oil.
What’s notable is because some of the lipids are not as mature in the green mandarin, this essential oil is not phototoxic.
