Blend Like A Professional With NO. 79
When it comes to fragrance oils, I’m often asked “How would you blend this”? NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe is a wonderfully complex and sophisticated scent, but there are still gaps in that beautiful scent profile that we can play with and exploit.
I am here for this to show you where those gaps are and define the space you can play with. It’s up to you to fill some of those gaps by adding in new scents and accords which will create something truly unique.
Have fun and explore creating exciting new accords with harmonizing oils. These harmonies can be created with essential oils, fragrance oils, or in synergistic combinations of the two.
Blending NO. 79
NO. 79 offers lovely versatility despite its complexity. We just need to keep our eye on the balance of the original aroma to blend it successfully.
Top Notes
The unusual top notes seem surprising for a fragrance oil that is all about the luxury of Vanilla. It opens with the fresh clean and crips notes of Eucalyptus and fresh Linen.
This is where you need to consider that balance through the heart and base notes before you let loose.
You could add in more green notes, but you don’t want to stray into the realms of herbal or medicinal. You want cool, crisp greenery like Cucumber and even the fruity offering of a green Melon.
There’s space for some zest and some zing with any of the citrus oils. Kaffir Lime and Lime essential oils have the perfect balance of sharp green notes. Orange citrus would add more warmth and there’s space to add plenty of Sweet Orange or Mandarin.
Suggestions For Essential Oils
- Sweet Orange and Mandarin add zingy warmth, while Lime echoes the cool crisp greenery.
- Lemon Eucalyptus and Lemon Tea Tree will also add zing, and freshness and echo the green notes.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Pair it with the cool green of NO. 1109 - Inspired by: Cucumber Melon by Bath & Body Works and the freshness of NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint.
- Use it as a supporting act to bring warmth and richness to NO. 1112 - Inspired by: Eucalyptus Spearmint by Bath & Body Works
Heart Notes
The delicious heart notes of NO. 79 are richly complex. Smoky wisps embrace the almond notes of Amaretto and the narcotic headiness of Jasmine.
However, despite its complexity, we can still do quite a lot in the heart space to stamp our own mark on it.
We can add in more florals and we can do this in several ways:
- Go light with Rose Geranium, Lavender, and Helichrysum to lift and brighten.
- Round the heart out, with deeper tones of Rose, Neroli, and Lilac.
- Plump for all-out intoxication with Tuberose, Heliotrope, and a lot more Jasmine.
Try them all and see which you prefer, they are all glorious!
With the dash of Clove in the base notes, we can add spice here too. Aim for warmth in Ginger, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon.
Suggestions for Essential Oils
- Rose Geranium and Lavender will elevate the heart and make it lighter.
- Jasmine and Ylang Ylang will add narcotic and intoxicating sensuousness.
- Add some spice accords to warm things up a little, with Ginger Root (Dried) and Nutmeg.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Round out the heart notes with floral scent profiles like NO. 33 - Fresh Cut Roses and NO. 49 - Lilac Blossom.
- Make it altogether more intoxicating with NO. 38 - Gardenia and NO. 43 - Honeysuckle & Jasmine.
Base Notes
The base notes are a delicious and mouthwatering confection of Praline and Vanilla tousled with Musk and smooth Amber. It’s breathtaking and captivates you to the point you don’t want to put it down and you just want to keep the scent coming.
When something is so utterly delicious, why mess with it? In truth, you don’t need to mess with it, you can leave it exactly as it is, especially if you want a more feminine blend.
If you want something more masculine, deeper, and with a little more mystery, then, by all means, try these next suggestions.
- Masculine - try notes of Tobacco, Leather, heady spices like Star Anise, and more musk.
- Deeper - you can add an extra depth layer by introducing wood into the profile. Amyris, Cedarwood, Palo Santo, and Sandalwood are all great choices.
- Mystery - play on that smokey aspect and add just a soupcon of alcohol notes.
Essential Oil Recommendations
- Add dimension and extra warmth with stronger spices, and try Star Anise and Cinnamon Bark.
- Introduce woody aromas with Sandalwood, Palo Santo, and Cedarwood (Atlas)
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
- Enhance the masculine aspects with NO. 39 - Genuine Leather and NO. 3100 - Inspired by: Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford.
- Introduce smoky notes with NO. 1203 - Inspired by: Feu de Bois by Diptyque and NO. 16 - Campfire. Pair it with the similar notes of NO. 1113 - Inspired by: Iced Vanilla Woods by Bath & Body Works to double up on all the great scent notes.
- Add mystery with notes of alcohol with NO. 45 - Kentucky Bourbon and the sweet rum notes in NO. 52 - Maple Syrup.

Professional Blending Techniques
Let’s get you blending like a professional, just a few industry hints and tips can make all the difference to your blending.
Balance
Many fragrance oils are balanced in the heart notes, however, this is not always the case. Don’t fall into the trap of presumption either, always sit for a minute assessing the fragrance. Attempt to define and discern where its balance point lies. Where does it sit in the notes?
Defining and maintaining this important balance is key to your blending success. It is also something that comes with practice and experience, so be kind to yourself if you are just starting out.
What is creating the balance?
After you discern where the balance sits, the next question to ask is what is creating this balance? Can you tell which elements are creating it or is it just an amalgamation of them all?
Your key question to ask is - How can I introduce new accords and maintain that balance? It is in these tiny aromatic spaces, that you will soon learn both to define, and maintain, that all-important balance. Balance is key to creating successful and sensational blends.
Patience
I am utterly useless when it comes to practical patience. I just want to get stuck in! However, going at things like a bull at a gate has cost me some expensive mistakes in the past. So please appreciate that I dispense this wisdom based wholly on experience.
Develop a sense of immersing yourself into a world of beautiful fragrances, a place to relish and linger. That helps foster your patience and develop the habit of working in tiny steps and increments. Learn to work just a couple of drops at a time, then stop to mix and test it. Then you just work in the same tiny steps until you reach the perfect balance.
Working in this disciplined manner makes it hard to go wrong and you avoid making expensive mistakes, (like I did). Make it standard practice whether you use rare, precious, and expensive essential oils and fragrance oils, or abundant and cost-effective ones.
Scent Strips
Again, regardless of the cost and rarity of our essential and fragrance oils, we want to standardize how we evaluate our blends.
It's more effective to evaluate a developing scent by getting the fragrance out of the bowl/bottle and into the air where it will react with oxygen. In the same way, it will when used in your Diffuser Blends or a Reed Diffuser.
For this, we need scent strips which are extremely cost effective and a useful tool. Beginners will find them a boon to evaluate fragrances more effectively. It won’t take long to appreciate the marked differences a scent strip makes.
Scent strips allow you to evaluate its aroma more effectively and get a more accurate assessment of the developing scent. They also help you avoid making potentially expensive mistakes.
Breaks
The brain processes the scent that travels up from our nose. However, after a while, it gets a little lazy and stops doing its job. Lo and behold your brain just stops processing the scents. This is what is termed as going ‘nose blind’.
You can avoid nose blindness by:
- Every twenty minutes, take a ten-minute break.
- Help your brain reset and get it some fresh air, if you can.
- If you are working with heady, intoxicating, or narcotic essential oils, take regular breaks.
When you go nose blind, you lose the ability to evaluate your scent effectively. Take regular breaks to avoid it.
NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe Blending Framework
NO. 79 offers you supreme luxury and opulence with its luscious and deeply complex aroma. Despite its complexity, it is relatively easy to blend with other essential oils and fragrance oils and so it is great for beginners.
More seasoned blenders could play with the balance in the top notes, how green can you go? How can you introduce a floral heart and maintain the freshness in the top notes? Play with those aspects for a challenge.
It is relatively genderless, so, by all means, tip it whichever way suits you or leave it as it is!
Remember, these are simply suggestions. Try things that appeal to you and you think will work and be sure to have fun building your blending skills and creating your own bespoke diffuser blends.

Follow This Blending Framework:
Top Notes
With Linen and Eucalyptus bringing freshness to the top notes. You want to try and maintain a crisp, fresh, and clean introduction. Go one of three ways:
- Citrus: Introduce orange citrus notes to add zesty warmth, try Mandarin, Sweet Orange, and Tangerine. Bergamot adds sharpness, Lemon, Lime, and Grapefruit.
- Floral: Avoid top notes flowers that are too medicinal or herbal and stick with soft and gentle Lavender and Helichrysum.
- Green: You can afford to add a dash of menthol or camphorous notes here, but not much! Cool things down with Cucumber or Green Melon. Add a fresh and synergistic herbal and citrus zing with Lemon Eucalyptus and Lemon Tea Tree.
Heart Notes
The heart space is rich with unusual accords made up of the almond-like tones of Amaretto, heady Jasmine, and wisps of Smoke. Despite the complexity, there is still room here to play with and introduce spice and build on the floral note.
- Floral - NO. 79 readily blends with floral scents. Either go lighter and brighter with Lilac, Neroli, Rose, and Rose Geranium or plump for intoxicating aromas like Gardenia, Hyacinth, Jasmine, and ylang-ylang.
- Spice - You can afford to warm things up and introduce spice into the heart space. I like the warmth of Ginger and Nutmeg, the fruity tones of Black Pepper & Pink Pepper and Cardamom, and the verve of Coriander.
Base Notes
The base opens with mouthwatering accords of Praline and Vanilla that weave like ribbons of unctuous caramel through the smoothness of Amber and the allure of Musk. Just deep and delicious. Yet, there is space to make it deeper, and broader and give it a real masculine air.
- Spice: You can afford to go as rich, heady, and as deep as you dare here. There’s more than enough room for it. Try Cinnamon Bark, Clove Bud, and the unmistakable notes of Star Anise.
- Woods: Introduce wood accords with the lighter aroma of Amyris and Palo Santo. Hit the middle ground with Cedarwood and deepen it down with precious Oud and Sandalwood.
- Animalic: Leather and Musk are such a synergistic combination with NO. 79. It will create a sensuous, almost erotic, effect. Certainly, one to pair with heady flowers in the heart space.
- Mystery: Add mystery and masculinity with stronger notes of Smoke to unfurl through the profile and add that touch of je ne sais quoi! Maybe run a few rivulets of alcohol with Rum or a smokey Bourbon through it too.

Luscious Recipes With NO. 79
NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe is such a sophisticated fragrance oil that will perform beautifully across a wide variety of applications.
Let’s focus today on that sense of opulent sophistication it brings to wax products and to bath time.
We are going to make Wax Melts and Bath Melts, they sound similar but have very different ingredients. I’ll show you how to expand your skills from home products to topical ones.
Vanilla Luxe Wax Melts
There is no mystery to making your own Wax Melts you know. I appreciate they are easy to buy from the store or the craft market, as everyone seems to be making them. However, that confines you to their fragrance choices, set yourself free, and make them for yourself with your own bespoke blends.
For all the information on waxes and equipment pop over to Fragrance Oil Of The Week: NO. 1015 - Inspired By: Ocean Eyes & Grace Vanderbilt Hotel.
IFRA Safety
NO. 79 in IFRA Category 12 has no maximum safety restrictions.
This means that in 100ml of product, you can use as much NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe Soaps and Candles fragrance oil as you wish. But we recommend no more than 10%.
As Wax Melts are in the same category as Diffuser Blends, you can use the Diffuser Blend formulas above for your Wax Melts too. Again, stick to using 10% or less of your overall wax weight.
You can use the Candle option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes.
You Will Need:
- Double boiler, preferably one with a pouring lip
- Pan stand/holder
- Weigh scales
- Measuring jug
- Stainless steel spoon
- Molds or Wax Melts outers
- Oil and waterproof labels
Ingredients:
- 100g of Wax Pellets of your choice, but I recommend Soy Wax (Hydrogenated Soy Bean Oil)
- 5 - 10 ml of NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil.
Optional: Wax colorant of your choice - follow the individual manufacturer's instructions on how much to add and when, as they vary.
Safety:
- Always protect your work surfaces from molten wax.
- Wear heat-protective gloves.
Method:
Working Sensibly and Safely
- Always use newspaper or an absorbent disposable covering to cover your work surface. It’s no joke dropping molten wax, and you need to protect your work surfaces.
- It makes sense to work in an area that is not carpeted and with easy clean flooring. If you don’t have that, work in your sink instead, lined with several layers of newspaper. Do not allow ANY wax to go down the plughole!
- Prepare your equipment and ingredients so they are all ready to go and close to hand. It will help you work quickly and efficiently.
Melting The Wax
- Over low to medium heat, set your double boiler, allowing it to warm through for several minutes.
- Add your wax and let it melt over the low heat. Be patient, letting it melt over low heat is better for the wax. You can always stir it to break up any clumping and encourage it to melt faster.
- If you are using a can in a saucepan, don't scorch your wax, keep an eye on it.
- Adding colorant? Check the manufacturer's instructions now - you may need to add it at this juncture.
- Once all the wax (and colorant) is melted, remove the pan from the heat. Remove the top portion of the double boiler/tin can and place it on a pot holder to protect your work surface.
Adding Fragrance Oil and Essential Oil
- It needs to cool down a tad before adding your fragrance oil or essential oils. The ideal temperature you are looking for is between 180-185F for soy wax. Of course, this is where an infrared thermometer comes into its own! But most of us will just have to gauge/guess it!
- Add in all your fragrance and/or essential oils.
- Stir the oils well until they are evenly distributed through the wax. It will take a lot longer than you think, so stir for at least a couple of minutes.
Molding Wax Melts
- Remember the quantity of wax melts you will get depends entirely on the size of your mold. Don’t go too big or your molten wax may be too voluminous for the little dish on your burner. They only need to hold a small amount of wax.
- If your molds are too big, just fill them part way, this works well in flower shapes, hearts, and stars particularly.
- Pour your wax into your chosen molds to a suitable level.
- Pop them aside to set, but cover them with a clean soft cloth. This will protect them from dust particles.
- Once your Wax Melts are set, unmold them and leave them to cool fully. This is especially important if you intend to package them. Do it when they are cold and cured a little.
- If you are using Wax Melt outers, simply pour your wax in and cover it with a clean cloth, making sure the cloth does not touch the wax. Once set and fully cooled, shut the lid. Always fully cool before sealing otherwise you risk the formation of mold in the warm and damp environment.
- Now be sensible and a little considered here - NEVER discard excess wax down the sink. If you do, the chances that you will block it up are huge.
- Pour any excess wax into a muffin case and discard it in the household refuse if you must. I save my extra wax to loosen stiff zips, wax curtain rails, and condition my sewing thread! If I make a few at a time, I tip it into a small jar already fixed with a wick to make a ‘Waste Candle’... there is no need to waste anything here.
Curing Wax Melts
- I mentioned your wax melts curing, do they really need to? Not really! You may use your wax melts right away. However, over time they do cure a little and the fragrance can improve through the curing process. It can also help you achieve a better throw of scent.
Good Practice in Labeling
- You must ALWAYS label your wax melts.
- It is all very good you are saying now “Well I know what they are”! But how confident are you in remembering that 6 months from now? Add the extra pressure of the ER docs asking what was in it, after your four-year-old thought it was chocolate. At that point a label seems like a good idea, so let's do it NOW.
- Label it! At the very least, pop the ingredients list in the same storage jar, which you can grab and go if ever need to!
Storing Your Wax Melts
- Preferably, store your labeled wax melts in an airtight container, to help preserve the fragrance.
How to Use:
- Always be sure to place your Wax Melt Burner on a fire/heatproof candle plate and a level, stable surface.
- Make sure it is out of reach of pets and children. Carpet, waggy dog tails, and molten wax are not a great combination!
- Place out of strong draughts and where it cannot be easily knocked over.
- First gauge the size of your wax melt, if it seems too large, snap some off and save it for next time.
- Turn it on if it is electric, or ignite a tea light and pop the wax melts into the dedicated well.
- Never leave Wax Melt Burners and their candles burning unattended.
- Depending on the quality of your wax, fragrance oils, and the humidity of your environment, wax melt can last several melts. All you need to do is replace it once the scent fades.
- Again, we don’t need unnecessary waste here. Don’t waste the discarded wax melts, refresh them with the same fragrance oil. Alternatively, make them into a candle.
Bath Melts
NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe is perfect for Bath Melts with its rich and opulent fragrance. Bath melts are a combination of nourishing carrier oils mixed with softening cosmetic butter. You can add salt, sugar, and even glitter for an extra bit of lushness.
Find more in-depth information on How to Make Bath Melts With Essential Oils. It's about time I did a new article on these, so let me know what you’d like to see.
IFRA Safety
NO. 79 in IFRA Category 9 has maximum safety restrictions of 1.85%.
This means that in 100ml of product, you can use up to 1.85 ml of NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe Soaps and Candles fragrance oil. This is a very low safety dilution rate. We may need to consider what we can add to it, to enhance the overall formulation.
You can use the Soap option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes in the same category.
You will need:
- Access to a Fridge/Freezer
- Heatproof mat
- Double Boiler
- Stainless Steel Spoon
- Molds
- Label(s)
Ingredients:
- 4 tbsp Mango Butter (Mangifera Indica)
- 2 tbsp Jojoba Carrier Oil (Camellia Japonica)
- 2 tbsp Pink Himalayan Rock Salt (Sodium Chloride)
- 2 ml of NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
- 20 drops of Vanilla Oleoresin (Vanilla Planifolia)
Optional -
- Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's guidance on how much to add and when and note where in the recipe it should be added.
- Colorant
- Glitter dust
Method:
If you choose to use a preservative or a colorant follow your individual manufacturer's instructions for how much to use and note when in the process to add it.
- Set your molds ready to go.
- If you are using the salt, add this to the bottom of the mold now. You do not add it to the oil/butter mixture, all you need to do is pour the mixture over the salt. You can use this to create pretty crystalline effects, especially when you color the salt crystals to varying degrees.
- Set your double boiler over low to medium heat and melt your cosmetic butter.
- Once molten, remove it from the heat, separate the double boiler, and place the top on a heatproof mat.
- Wait for the mixture to cool a little and then add the carrier oils.
- Add your fragrance oils and essential oils once the mixture is as cool as possible, but it still needs to be liquid and fluid.
- Pour the mixture into the molds and set aside to cool, cover them with a clean soft cloth to keep any dust particles out.
- Once mostly cool, place in the refrigerator for an hour or two until it feels completely solid.
- Carefully unmold and let them cure for 12-24 hours before use.
How to use:
- Always do a 24-48 hour patch test before using.
- Store in an airtight container at a consistently cool temperature. If they get too warm, they will melt.
- Simply place one bath melt into your warm bath water and let it melt.
- Work the floating oil into your skin gently and let it absorb in the bath for at least 20 minutes.
- Rinse off any excess with warm soapy water.
- Take care getting in and out of the bath as it will be slippy.
Safety:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
- Take care getting in and out of the bath as it will be slippy, use non-slip bath mats.
Protect Surfaces and Furnishings From Fragrance Oil
Disclaimer: As oil-based products, fragrance oils may stain polished and painted surfaces, furniture, and furnishings. Please take steps to protect surfaces before use.

The Final Word
It has been stupendous this week working with the uber-sophistication of NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe. Its unusual notes took me by surprise and I got lost in its complexity, in all the best ways.
Enjoy the light, clean, and fresh introduction of Linen and Eucalyptus as it spirals down into a complex heart space. Here the almond tones of alcohol and Amaretto, entwine through the floral headiness of Jasmine, while smokey tendrils unfurl and dance on your senses. Sweet nutty notes of Praline and rich creamy Vanilla run ribbons through the divine smooth tones of Amber and that alluring final flourish of Musk.
Just delightly luxurious, elegant, and opulent. You’ll love NO. 79 with its amazing versatility and creative scope.
Try the fragrant Wax Melt and sumptuous Bath Melt recipes, two similar-sounding products with very different ingredients!
However, you choose to use NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe, whether standalone or beautifully blended into a bespoke scent, sink into it and enjoy its beautiful aroma and complexity. We think it's rather splendid here at VINEVIDA.
