Fragrance Oil Of The Week: NO. 83 - Bibliothèque Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil

NO. 83 - Bibliothèque Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil Showcase

NO. 83 - Bibliothèque is the French term for library and this blend is like a time machine for your senses. It whisks you back to the bustling New York Library of the 1920s and other even more exotic times and places.

A book lover's delight, it evokes dusty shelves and that sense of anticipation as you  draw out a  leather-bound book as its unmistakable fragrance escapes

Elemi opens the scent profile with its complex resinous fragrance. Honeyed Lemon dances with the smokey Pine note you would expect from a resin. Lingering notes of Pink Pepper and Frankincense meld into the rich woody notes of Teakwood.

The coniferous swirls of Cedar, entangle with the Sandalwood-like note of Amyris before delving down into the glorious earthiness of Patchouli.

The darker, musky notes of Leather, Cade, and Vetiver add a cacophony of rich, deep, and complex base notes to the profile.

Grab yourself a bottle of NO. 83 and sink down into a capacious leather chair with a steaming hot drink and indulge yourself in your favorite pastime, and flick through the pages of your favorite book.

Fragrance Notes

    • Top: Elemi, Teakwood
    • Mid: Cedarwood,  Leather
    • Bottom: Amyris, Cade, Dark Musk, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver

Diffuser Blends With NO. 83

Before we start delving into creating stunning diffuser blends with NO. 83, take a moment now to check that you have chosen the right type of fragrance oil for your diffuser.

IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends

Diffuser Blends appear in IFRA Category 12, NO. 83 - Bibliothèque fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions in this particular category.

Method:

    1. Into a small measuring jug, carefully measure out all of your essential oils and/or fragrance oils
    2. Mix them together and combine thoroughly.
    3. Use a small funnel to keep your bottle clean and oil-free and decant your diffuser blend into a 10ml dropper bottle. A clean bottle helps your label stick.
    4. Since your bottle now contains undiluted oil, it presents a safety hazard, so you must label your bottle clearly.
    5. List all of your ingredients on an oil and waterproof label and annotate the label as ‘UNDILUTED’.
    6. Also add a date and a 12-month expiry date.

Using Your Diffuser Blends:

    1. You all have different diffusers, so our first advice to you is to seek advice from your own individual manufacturer's instructions.
    2. Are you unsure if to dilute your blend or not? Again, we ask you to consult your manufacturer's instructions for their specific instructions.
    3. If you want extra advice on which oil for what diffuser, read How To Use Vinevida Oils.

Recipes With NO. 83

NO. 83 - Bibliothèque is such a complex and unusual fragrance oil, I had to think long and hard about which recipes it is most suited to.

Occasionally, I’ll throw out a question to my husband and get his ideas too and on smelling it, he immediately said ‘Beard Oil’. Being the sporter of a decent beard, I took him at his word and that is our first recipe this week.

Personally, I thought the whole premise of NO. 83 is to remind us of a library and all the things we love about being in a library. Old books, leather chairs, and patinated wood. It made me think about how we could evoke that feeling in our own homes and it got me thinking about a  Beeswax Wood Polish. It’s not a recipe we have done for the blog before, so it seemed the perfect choice for our second recipe this week.

Beard Oil

I’ve done a few beard recipes and wanted to give you a brand new recipe, so I’ve tinkered with the carrier oils in the base for you. Why not try something new to bring nourishing goodness to your precious beard?

I think you are really going to love this…and I know your beard will.

IFRA Safety

NO. 83  in IFRA Category 5B has maximum safety restrictions of 5.47%.

    3. Squeeze out the contents of the Vitamin E Capsules into the jug, and pierce them with a pin first.
    4. Add the Glycerine and mix well.
    5. Decant into your 50ml bottle using a bottle funnel.
    6. Label clearly listing all ingredients and add the instruction to ‘Shake well before use’.

Beeswax Wood Polish

I’m so excited about this recipe because it turned out brilliantly and I have been using it everywhere! The house smells incredible and my wood looks better than ever!

I also love the fact that it has gorgeous natural ingredients and there are no harsh, toxic chemicals in sight. Sadly, many commercial polishes are full of them. Kick them to the curb and make this little gem, you’ll never look back.

Now, this polish is not like commercial polishes in a spray can which will clean your wood too, this is more for protecting your wooden surfaces, so give them a good clean first. Make sure they are lovely and dry and then apply this polish to keep your wood in tip-top condition.

Hard Or Soft Polish?

This is your polish, so take control over how hard or soft you like your polish to be. You control the hardness by adding more wax, and make it softer by adding more oil.

Hard Polish is usually 2 parts oil to 1 part wax.

Softer Polish is usually 3 parts oil to 1 part wax.

Choose what suits you best, maybe make both and give yourself a choice! The recipe is for the softer version, if you want it harder, add more wax and reduce the oil.

Always add an antioxidant to help extend the life of your polish, you can use Vitamin E oil for this or a commercial preservative.

IFRA Safety

NO. 83  in IFRA Category 10A has no maximum safety restrictions in this category.

This means that you can use as much NO. 83 - Bibliothèque Soaps and Candles fragrance oil as you want. We suggest 10% is more than enough though.

You can use the Hard Surface Cleaner option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your wax polishes, as it falls into the same category.

You will need:

    1. Double boiler
    2. Measuring jug
    3. Stainless steel spoon
    4. Silicone Spatula
    5. 4 oz Tin with lid
    6. Oil and Waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional:

    • Preservative - follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Safety:

    • Not for topical use
    • Always carry out patch tests in inconspicuous areas, especially on precious surfaces.

Method:

    1. Set your double boiler over low to medium heat to prewarm.
    2. Once warmed, add your Beeswax and allow to melt slowly. Low and slow is better than too hot and fast!
    3. The moment your wax is molten, add your carrier oil and let it warm for a moment or two.
    4. Remove from the heat and separate the top pan from the water underneath and set aside for a few moments to cool.
    5. Add your fragrance oil and Vitamin E.
    6. Pour into your tin and cover with a soft clean cloth, making sure the cloth does not touch the surface of the polish. Adding the lid while it is still warm can encourage the formation of mold so we want to avoid that at all costs.
    7. Once fully cooled, remove the cloth and add the lid.
    8. Label clearly, listing all ingredients.

How to use:

    1. It’s important to patch-test your precious wooden surfaces in an inconspicuous place first, so please do this.
    2. Apply to a clean, dry surface with a soft cloth, and work into the wood well in small circular motions.
    3. Remove any excess polish with a clean rag.
    4. Buff to a high sheen with a clean, fluffy duster.
    5. Warming the polish first can help with the absorption of the polish into the grain of the wood.

Creative Ideas For NO. 83

I love our more unusual fragrance oils. They really stretch you creatively and you will love finding new and exciting ways of using NO. 83 in your toiletries and for scenting your home.

Aftershave and Cologne

My husband thought NO. 83 - Bibliothèque would work beautifully as a Cologne or an Aftershave and that was my first thought too.

They can take a little time to put together though and this week I wanted recipes to give you quick and easy instant impact. This is why our suggestion appears here instead, pick it up when you have time to dedicate to it. Though you have just about enough time to make some holiday gifts, get going on it NOW!

Set The Scene

Use No. 83 to set the scene in your home and bring the library to your house… my house already looks like one, but now it smells like one too. Blissful.

Use No. 83, to create your own wonderfully aromatic Room Spray, Linen Spray, and even Carpet Freshener. You could give your cushion covers and sofa throws a quick wash in detergent infused with Bibliothèque.

Candles and Wax Melts

Naturally, because I had the wax out to make the polish I thought I’d try it out in a Wax Melt too. I’m so pleased that I did because it worked so well. The intensity of fragrance in proportion to the amount that I used was incredible, you don’t need much at all. Making this rather cost-effective for highly aromatic candles and wax melts.

We recommend using no more than 10% fragrance oil in your overall proportion in candles and wax melts but I used it at 2% as I was thrilled with the intensity. All those base notes are really doing their job perfectly.

You can use this to your advantage and blend it with lighter, more ethereal fragrance oils to provide an anchor and some extra body to the overall scent profile. Just a 0.5- 1% addition can make a big difference to your blends to create new and harmonizing accords.

Perfect For Bookworms for the Holidays

Got a bookworm in the family? It’s easy to just buy them a book and hope for the best but why not create a ‘Book Reading Kit’? You know them best, create a kit that helps them carve out the precious time to indulge in their favorite pastime.

Include scented candles or wax melts to help set the scene. A Room Spray can add an extra layer of scent, why not add a few relaxing essential oils to help them relax, focus, and enjoy?

Check out How To Make Scented Paper With Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils and get your craft kit out to make uniquely scented Bookmarks, personalized for your very own Bookworm. They will love it, every time they open the book, it will release this incredible relaxing aroma.

Book reading kits make amazing gifts for the holidays and can be knocked up in no time at all and for very little money. Perfect for teachers' holiday gifts and worlds apart from a box of chocolates! Your imagination is the only limit here, get crafting!

Protect Surfaces and Furnishings From Fragrance Oil

Disclaimer: As oil-based products, fragrance oils may stain polished and painted surfaces, furniture, and furnishings. Please take steps to protect surfaces before use.

Always carry out patch tests in inconspicuous areas, especially on your more precious surfaces and linens.
