Blending Ideas For NO. 74
NO. 74 provides even the more experienced blenders with a challenge, so I’m going to split my suggestions into three categories today:- The Easy Route - The easiest choice for successful results.
- The Field Stile - Slows you down, and makes you work for your results.
- The Path Less Traveled - The path to blending advances that offer challenges in maintaining balance.
Top Notes
The main component in the top notes is the fresh air effect of Ozone that meets the higher notes of Jasmine. These straddle from her usual space in the heart notes over into the top notes. It’s a synergistic combination that brings out the best in both elements to create a vibrant and sparkling accord.
We need to be cautious then, not to dampen that sparkle!
The Easy Route
The Easy Route is to uplift that sparkle on a swirl of bright Citrus.
However, not just any citrus. Stick to ones with zing like the green and yellow ones. Bergamot, Lemon, Lime, and White Grapefruit essential oils are all great choices.
Try NO. 1118 - Inspired by: Sugared Lemon by Bath & Body Works to add more floral and green elements and introduce a dash of sugar.
The Field Stile
This suggestion offers a little more challenge, try adding the green citrus scents in like, Lemon Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, and Lemon Tea Tree essential oils. The key is to introduce enough citrus zing to balance the green element against the warmth of the overall profile.
For fragrance oils, try the zing of NO. 48 - Lemon Verbena and try NO. 1405 - Inspired by: Lemongrass & Ginger by Nest for a green citrus aroma warmed with spice.
The Path Less Traveled
Herbal florals would be my suggestion if you fancy a challenge here.
Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum all bring lovely floral aromas.
Lavender needs those medicinal tones balancing out.
Chamomile and Helichrysum have more ‘Hay-like’ aromas that suit the warmth of this scent profile.
Try NO. 47 - Lavender Vanilla fragrance oil as it has that lovely creamy ribbon of Vanilla running through it already, softening that medicinal effect.
Heart Notes
In the heart notes we find the main body of Jasmine in all her intoxicating glory. Here she dances with the first in a layer of Musk, with the lightest variation. Then we have that sensuous dusting of powder, melding with the vanilla-like aroma of Tonka Bean.
As heart notes go these are very robust and fill that space out leaving little room to play with. However, this is me, and I can always find a gap to exploit and experiment with.
The Easy Route
The easiest choice would be to introduce another heady tropical flower to complement the Jasmine, like the gorgeous Ylang Ylang.
We have some great floral fragrance oil that would work brilliantly here. The skill is getting the right amount to not overpower those gorgeous powder tones. Less is more here.
Personally, Ylang Ylang would always be my first choice in this instance.
The Field Stile
If you introduced those green accords into the top notes, why not shy away from the tropical floral, but still go floral with Rose Geranium.
If you don’t want to add more green, go with Rose essential oil.
We do have NO. 33 - Fresh Cut Roses fragrance oil, but that also has that freshly snipped green element.
Another option would be to go deeper with a more full bodied introduction of a Blackcurrant and Rose accord with NO. 1201 - Inspired by: Baies by Diptyque.
The Path Less Traveled
In terms of essential oils you could look to the spices with more fruity aspects, you don’t want to go too deep or heady or, you will detract from, and unbalance, this heartspace. Stick to the orange tones of Cardamom, Coriander and Black Pepper. Pink Pepper would be perfect, if you have it.
I have two challenging fragrance oil suggestions here for you to try. The key with both of these fragrance oils suggestions is not only in the amount you add, but also what you place in the top and base notes to complement it.
- First, try to swing it to a more tropical feel with the fusion of tropical flowers and coconut accords of NO. 1407 - Inspired by: Sunkissed Hibiscus by Nest. It has more complementary notes than you might think.
- Second, go all Mediterranean on me and try the figgy fruity delight of NO. 1206 - Inspired by: Philosykos by Diptyque, it has green, fruity and woody elements that can all meld to create exciting new accords..
Base Notes
The base notes are a glorious fusion of the smooth, divine aroma of Amber, the unmistakable sensuous earthiness of Patchouli, and that delicious, most precious Sandalwood. Then comes that other layer of Musk, with this one being much darker, more full bodied and more arresting. Especially since it comes entwined in those sexy aromas of Leather.
The Easy Route
The easy road is to go with a light wood here. You could go with the Sandalwood like aroma of Amyris or you could even add the buttery tones of Palo Santo.
An easy fragrance oil to introduce into NO.74 would be NO. 59 - Patchouli.
The Field Stile
Go for deeper woods with a dash of spice to balance and add another layer of warmth. Try Cedarwood enrobed in Ginger Root (Dried) essential oil.
If you want to stick with fragrance oils, there is no better choice than NO. 21 - Cedarwood & Amber here. However, if you do something deeper you could give NO. 50 - Mahogany Teakwood a go. It has a dash of Lavender and Geranium in it which could complement your top and heart notes.
The Path Less Traveled
Actually, there are a number of ways you can go if you want a challenge.
Introduce resinous aromas like Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils. There’s even a matching fragrance oil NO. 32 - Frankincense & Myrrh. It will bring warmth and a hint of spice and that gorgeous resinous effect.
Spice, I know I said not to go too deep or too heavy-handed in the heart notes, but in the base notes we have a little more room where we can play with Clove Bud or Cinnamon Bark. Ramp up the Vanilla Oleoresin for an extra layer of comfort.
You could even add a dash of sweetness and sugar and an extra layer of Vanilla with fragrance oils like - NO. 22 - Christmas Splendor and NO. 23 - Cinnamon Roll.
A Few More Blending Tips for Success
Maintaining The Balance
The overall success when blending depends on your ability to define and maintain its balance. The first thing you need to do is to assess your fragrance’s individual scent. Where does its balance lie? Which elements are creating it? If you add in certain accords could you disrupt the whole balance?
The key skill to acquire is - How to introduce new accords and maintain the overall balance.
Exercise Patience
You can avoid making expensive mistakes, by slowing things right down. Working a couple of drops at a time, mixing and testing, before moving on. When you work in tiny increments it allows you to rectify any mistakes, quickly and easily.
Use Scent Strips
Thankfully, Scent Strips are easy to source and extremely cheap, yet they can make a marked difference to your evaluations. You want your blend to react to the oxygen in the air, so get it out of the bottle. It affords you a better idea of the developing scent.
Don’t Go Noseblind
Scent is not processed in the nose, it is processed in the brain. However, after a while, the brain just stops processing these scents, and you become ‘nose blind’. Avoid going nose blind and take a ten-minute break every twenty minutes. All the more preferable, if it is in fresh air.
Designing Bespoke Diffuser Blends With NO. 74
Just make sure before we delve any deeper that you are using the right fragrance oil for designing your bespoke diffuser blends.
You need to double-check you have chosen the right type of fragrance oil for your diffuser.
IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends
Diffuser Blends appear in IFRA Category 12, NO. 74 - Mystic Oud fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions in this particular category.
Method:
- Measure out all of your fragrance oils and/or essential oils into a small measuring jug.
- Combine them together thoroughly.
- Decant your diffuser blend into a 10ml dropper bottle, using a funnel helps you keep your bottle as clean and oil-free as possible, which is very useful when it comes to adhering to your label!
- You must label your bottle. It presents a significant safety hazard since it contains undiluted oil.
- Clearly list all of the ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
- Mark the label as ‘UNDILUTED’.
- Add a date to your label and a 12-month expiry date.
How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:
- For specific guidance on your own diffuser, we recommend that you consult your own individual manufacturer's instructions, please.
- Maybe, you are unsure if to dilute your blend or not. Again, please consult your manufacturer's instructions for their specific instructions.

Oud, Oud, Oud

I’ve gone for Oud overload here to deepen it off but I also want the Jasmine ‘sparkle’ intact for balance and interest. The NO. 1006 adds complementary aromas to bring it alive.

Spookalicious Recipes With NO. 74
You did not think I had forgotten it was Hallowe’en, did you? Of course not!
NO. 74 - Mystic Oud is a sublime choice for Hallowe’en, it has that sumptuous air of mystery and intrigue about it. Complexity and a dash of ‘je ne sais quoi’, draw you in and embrace you in all the best ways.Use it to lure unsuspecting victims your way and to fragrance yourself or your home for spooky, mystical celebrations.
Hallowe’en is a brilliant time for dressing up and wearing makeup. But often what a lot of people forget, is to add dimension to your makeup or costume. Adding in a shimmer or glitter element can help add this all-important aspect of dimension of your costume and makeup.
Then I have a stupendously easy Pumpkin Diffuser for you to have a go at. It’s so simple but really effective. Be the first to try it out! The kids will love this project.
Shimmer Oil, Lotion & Glitter Gel
Shimmery and beautifully ethereal, perfect for ghosts, fairies, and even the undead!
I’m going to show you how to do this in a couple of ways so that you can create different effects to enhance your Hallowe’en costume and makeup.
Make your life easy and use an unscented base lotion if you wish to save yourself a bit of time.
Using Mica
What did we do before Mica? It is such a revolutionary product and has completely transformed the face of makeup in recent years. It has never been easier to create your own cosmetics and makeup in bright, intense colors.
Since Mica is so fine, it is easily carried in both oil and a lotion base and can be applied to the skin through these methods. It will sit on the skin happily until it is brushed or washed off. It tends to last longer with some oil content. So, if you are using a ready-made lotion, mix your Mica into a tbsp of carrier oil first.
Using Glitter
If you want to use glitter, you need to think, ‘How do I make it stick to my skin’?
The gel is the answer to this, along with a dash of Glycerin for a little extra ‘stickiness’. If you try mixing glitter, especially large flake glitter with lotion or oil and expect it to stick, you are going to be disappointed. The only glitter you might get away with in these bases is super fine glitter.
If you want to use fine, medium or large flake glitter, pop it in a gel & glycerin base for the best results.
Can you mix Mica and Glitter together - yes, of course you can!
Designing The Perfect Effect
Choose Mica and Glitter colors to coordinate or complement with your costume and makeup.
Use the Shimmer Oil to add highlights to the cheeks, and the forehead and to elongate the nose. Use it on arms and legs to add a healthy glow, or an unhealthy one depending on the color.
Use green or gray mica to create Zombie highlights and super white or black for Vampires. Turn yourself into a Pumpkin with bright orange mica and glitter. The only limit is your imagination.
Choose Mica for highlights and for adding a sheen of subtle color, choose glitters for reflective and colorful effects.
If you want a more intense effect, simply add more Mica or Glitter to your recipe and consider coloring the base to add an extra enhancement.

Play On The Mystical Or Spiritual
No. 74 Mystic Oud, really does evoke that sense of mystery. Is there something bigger than us? Then ‘this’? I don't need to tell you that the New Age market has exploded and anything that is deemed mystical or spiritual can practically sell itself.
Case in point - I used to sell a beautiful Body Butter, packed with gloriously nourishing oils and I just called it ‘Body Whip’ to keep it simple. Over a weekend fair, I sold about 5. I was booked to do a Spiritual Fair, so I re-labeled it as ‘Mystic Whip’, and proceeded to sell out in just a few hours. Exact same product, with a different name and it flew out.
If you are a producer, this is a selling point all on its own and the aroma backs up the name. It’s a good fragrance oil to combine with crystals, herbs, and essential oils. Candles sprinkled with crystals seem to be all the rage right now and NO. 74 is the perfect fragrance oil for mystical candles.
It also translates well to soap and toiletries and creates products with a complex scent that dries down in layers of changing aromas. It really is delightful. I’ve yet to make it into a perfume, but this is on my list of next projects and I have very high hopes for it.
Dare I Mention The Holidays?
I know! Hallowe’en isn’t even done and I’m mentioning the holidays! In my defense, the Garden Centres here are bestowed with festive finery already and the turkeys are in the freezers at the supermarket. So don’t shoot me yet, please?
As I said above, NO. 74 translates beautifully to toiletries, soaps, and candles. It has some versatility towards a more festive fragrance too. We know it works well with Oranges and spices like Cardamom and Ginger.
If you want a more religious aspect to your creations, consider adding the stunning resins of Frankincense and Myrrh. Oud, along with these resins, have been spiritually revered for millennia.
Do your girlfriends love those tropical holiday scents, then push NO. 74 that way and pair it with NO. 1407 - Inspired by: Sunkissed Hibiscus by Nest or NO. 84 - Santal Tropics. You can make stunning gift sets, find ideas in Holiday Rush Solutions: Last-Minute Gift Ideas Unwrapped.
