What Is Skin Salve With Essential Oils?
There are many different types of Skin Salves with essential oils and they often get called other names. Let's have a look, there are a few you might recognize and some you may not. Essentially, they are all very similar, if not the exact same thing!
Ointment | Cream | Balm | Pomade | Embrocation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Unction | Unguent | Balsam | Rub | Emollient |
A Salve is usually a combination of wax and carrier oils. The carrier oils are often also infused with natural plant material, to enhance the healing properties.
A Skin Salve with essential oils uses essential oils to further add to the active components.
It is not unusual to find cosmetic butters in recipes too. These add extra soothing, nourishing, and hydrating qualities, as well as softening the overall texture.
The ingredients you add will inform the best application of your Skin Salve With Essential Oils.
- First Aid salves need essential oils with constituents that have antibacterial properties to kill any bugs and anti-inflammatory actions to soothe swelling or skin damage.
- Salves for dry and cracked skin need to be rich in heavier oils like Castor carrier oil and skin healing essential oils like Myrrh and Helichrysum.
- A Salve for dry and cracked lips, or HPV, must be a little more delicate. This would benefit Rose and Melissa essential oils to soothe, hydrate, and regenerate cell production which facilitates healing.
What Can I Use Skin Salve With Essential Oils For?
When you make your own Skin Salve with essential oils, your first question needs to be:
“What do I want my Skin Salve with essential oils to DO?”
- Do you need a healing salve to address broken, irritated, or upset skin?
- Are you in need of a skin salve aimed at hydrating and smoothing dry skin?
- Perhaps, you need a salve for cracked heels or dry skin on the feet and toes?
- Maybe, you overdid it in the sun and need some cooling and hydrating relief?
- If you have cold hands or stiff aching joints and muscles, you might benefit from a warming Salve designed to get the blood moving and warm you up, and give you some relaxation and relief.
The beauty of making your Skin Salve with essential oils is that you can tailor it exactly to your needs.
Why Make Your Own Skin Salve With Essential Oils?
For me, making my own Skin Salve with essential oils is about being empowered over my choices and taking control of what goes on to, and into, my body.
Natural Ingredients
I want my Skin Salve with essential oils to be stuffed full of luscious natural ingredients and organic where possible. I want to avoid needless chemicals that go onto my skin and get absorbed into my body.
It allows me to source my ingredients in line with my principles. I can take the time to research suppliers, manufacturers, and producers and buy directly if need be.
I can choose to source more locally, more ethically, and more sustainably and make better choices for myself, my family, my community, and the planet.
Cost/Budget
One thing I love about creating my own Skin Salve with essential oils is that I can do it really cheaply with quality ingredients. I don’t always have to compromise quality to suit my limited budget.
You can make very small amounts and it can last a long time as a Salve tends to go quite a long way. This is where you can gather a group of like-minded people and do a bulk buy and portion out the ingredients between you all. Saving you money and allowing you to maintain quality.
If all you have is Olive Oil in your kitchen and a tiny bit of Beeswax, you can still make a Salve. I’ll show you how as we go through the article.
Peace of Mind
I fully admit, I am on a bit of a mission at the moment. I am very focused on what goes into my body in terms of my diet to boost my gut health and immunity after a rather virulent infection laid me extremely low.
I am just as mindful of what goes into my Skin Salve with essential oils. When you apply a product to your skin, it sinks in, it doesn’t just sit on your skin. Therefore, any chemicals and toxins are absorbed into your skin and your bloodstream. This is the whole premise of using essential oils on your skin, you WANT them to be absorbed and get into your bloodstream. But do you want those nasties found in some commercial preparations too?
When you make your own Skin Salve with essential oils, you have control over EVERY single ingredient and if you do your due diligence with sourcing, it will give you peace of mind.
There is a lot to be said for peace of mind at the moment!

Tailoring to Exact Needs
Tailoring a bespoke Skin Salve with essential oils cuts out unnecessary waste and is more sustainable in the long run.
If you have a long-standing condition, then make a bigger batch. But, if you have a skin injury that will heal in time, just make a small amount instead.
Salves designed to be left in Natural First Aid Kit benefit from using carrier oils with long shelf lives, like Sweet Almond for example. It is also worth considering adding a natural-based preservative to help it along.
Make a healing salve or a skin salve for dry, cracked skin. Make what you NEED, in an amount that can be used up relatively quickly.
It also allows you to design a product in line with your exact needs. No more standing in front of store shelves, wondering if something is suitable and trying to weigh up which one might help. Alleviate all of that confusion and make your own!
Best Essential Oils For Skin Salve With Essential Oils
The best essential oils to use in your Skin Salve with essential oils very much depends on what you want it for.
First Aid
Skin Salve with essential oils for a First Aid Kit is the perfect product for the kids' knocked knees and cuts and grazes. Antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory essential oils like Tea Tree are a boon here. Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Thyme, and Oregano all have properties and actions for fighting bugs and soothing the skin.
If you are making a salve with children in mind, watch your safety data, especially with strong oils like Oregano and Thyme. If your salve is only for adults, you can use a little more essential oils.

Dry & Irritated Skin
If your skin is dry and irritated it needs moisture and hydration. Lock those in with a protective barrier. Beeswax and carrier oils are perfect for this. Rose and Frankincense essential oils are wonderful for soothing dry skin, making it feel and appear more supple and firm.
If you have skin conditions like Eczema or Dermatitis plump for soothing essential oils like Geranium, Roman and German Chamomile, and Rose essential oil.

Cracked, Very Dry, and Hard Skin
If the skin on your hands and feet has gone hard and dry, you need to get the big guns out. Essential oils with reputations for knitting skin back together, and for wound healing, are what you want here. Myrrh, Helichrysum, Frankincense, and Geranium are all wonderful for this.
Opt for rich cosmetic butters like Shea or Mango alongside protective Beeswax for a really nourishing Skin Salve with essential oils.
Curious why Helichrysum is so good? Check out - What Are The Benefits Of Helichrysum Essential Oil?
Cracked Lips and Cold Sores (HPV)
I am most likely to get cracked or chapped lips, as the seasons start to change, rather than in winter itself. That liminal space between seasons seems to be the difficult point for me.
Cracked lips need a more delicate Skin Salve with essential oils. Rose, Roman Chamomile, and Lavender can be invaluable.
If you suffer from cold sores or HPV then Melissa is your go to and it IS worth the price tag. Like magic in a bottle! Find out why in Melissa Essential Oil: The Elixir Of Life For Calm And Uplift.
Soothing and Cooling
You can make a wonderful Skin Salve with essential oils if you experience hot, red skin, or hot muscles and joints.
Hot joints can be indicative of conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. My knees are so hot to touch sometimes and I turn to essential oils like Lavender and Juniper which breaks down the buildup of uric and lactic acid, which contributes to these conditions.
Essential oils like Spearmint, Peppermint, and Eucalyptus can be wonderfully cooling on the skin and bring welcome relief.
If you have sunburn, I would always plump for an After Sun first but a Salve is usefully applied over it, at night, to lock in that hydration. Find my favorite, and most effective, After Sun recipe in Radiant Beach Body: Unlock Beauty With Essential Oils Kit.
Warming and Relieving
If you want a Skin Salve with essential oils that will warm tired, aching muscles, plump for essential oils like Black Pepper and Ginger, they are sure to get your blood moving.
Don’t forget to add essential oils with anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties like Lavender and Copaiba to make it more effective.

Best Carrier Oils For Skin Salve With Essential Oils
Tamanu
Tamanu carrier oil is my first choice of carrier oil to use in a Skin Salve with essential oils that will go into a First Aid Kit. It has both cicatrisant and anticoagulant properties, which make it invaluable in wound care and healing.
Pribowo (2021) says Tamnau is ‘proven to have potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, and even wound-healing abilities’.
We want all of those qualities in our Skin Salves for First Aid.
Sweet Almond
If you have to store a Skin Salve with essential oils for some time, or use it only occasionally, then choose something like Sweet Almond carrier oil that has quite a long shelf life.
Sweet Almond oil is rich and nourishing and very good for hydrating the skin. It is particularly good for skin that has become coarse and lifeless.
Blaak (2022) concluded that Sweet Almond, Evening Primrose, and Jojoba oils, ‘They are effective ingredients for skin care preparations to strengthen stratum corneum integrity, recovery, and lipid ratio’.
The stratum corneum is the skin's outermost layer.
Reach for Sweet Almond oil for crusty elbows and knees, persistent hard skin on the feet, and cracked and chapped lips.
I’d also choose it for babies when they have nappy rash because it's delicately gentle and soothing.
Castor
Castor Oil has a reputation for healing that goes back centuries.
It is wonderful for very dry, cracked skin for its ability to permeate through the deeper layers of skin. Likewise, it is often used in skin salves designed for eczema and dermatitis. Applying heat makes it absorb even better.
Jojoba
Jojoba carrier oil is a misnomer, it is actually a wax, but its consistency closely resembles sebum. It’s a good choice for oily skin and breakouts.
It is a great choice for combination skins and is a great choice if the skin needs balancing.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E capsules are just the right size to squeeze into a magical little pot of Skin Salve with essential oils.
Keen (2016) says that Vitamin E is widely used in cosmetic products to protect the skin from the harmful effects of solar radiation. It acts as a free-radical scavenger. Experimental studies suggest it may have photoprotective properties, meaning it can reduce the effects of ultraviolet radiation and potentially reduce related skin damage and skin cancers.
Best Ingredients For Skin Salve With Essential Oils
You will want very few other ingredients for your Skin Salve with essential oils, but you do need a wax. Cosmetic Butters are not essential to a Salve, but they are definitely welcome additions.
Waxes
When you make your own Skin Salve with essential oils, you need a wax base to mix with your carrier oil and essential oils. Which type of skin-safe wax you choose is up to you.
Beeswax (Cera alba)
This is one of my favorite waxes for Skin Salves with essential oils. It is a beautifully hard wax that is superb on the skin. It is jam-packed with its own skin-nourishing and protective qualities all of its own!
Beeswax is a 100% natural product, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. Note that vegans generally decline to use beeswax, so choose something else for a vegan-friendly product.
Soy Wax (Glycine wax)
Soy wax is sourced from soybeans, it is a relatively sustainable option. However, you do need to be aware that soybeans are notorious for being exposed to pesticides and herbicides. If you can, always choose organic.
Hemp Wax (Cannabis sativa oil & hydrogenated vegetable oil)
Less well-known is Hemp Wax, but it is rising in popularity. I love it for Lip Salves and Balms.
Hemp wax is popular with people whose skin is prone to conditions like psoriasis, acne, and eczema. It is often recommended for people with inflammation, swelling and varicose veins.
It will be interesting to watch the emerging science and research on this exciting wax option.
Hemp wax is becoming much more prevalent in the commercial production of lip care products, body butter and lotions, and skincare preparations.
Cosmetic Butters
Skin Salves with essential oils can be enhanced by adding rich and nourishing cosmetic butters.
They certainly have their place in Salves as they are often really high in helpful fatty acids.
Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao)
Cocoa Butter is a hard butter that is jam-packed with fatty acids to hydrate and nourish the skin. Used over a period of time Cocoa Butter can help permeate the deeper layers of the skin and consequently, improve the elasticity of the skin.
Cocoa Butter also forms a protective barrier over skin, like wax does, which helps by locking in moisture and hydration.
Mango Butter (Mangifera Indica)
Mango Butter is a semi-soft butter with a reputation for superb absorbency. It will sink down into the deepest skin layers, whilst it hydrates the skin, making it look plumper. It will also help to lock moisture into place, making the skin appear more supple and healthier looking, which is perfect for your Skin Salves with essential oils.
Mango Butter is loaded with vitamins A, C, and E, bursting with Omega 6 and 9 and other important fatty acids that your skin will thank you for.
Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)
Unrefined Shea is a soft butter that is brimming with glorious antioxidants, often associated with anti-aging qualities. Super rich in vitamin E, which is brilliant at boosting the skin’s moisture levels.
Rich in marvelous nutritious fatty acids, it is ideal for damaged and irritated skin, because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Be aware that refining processes do affect the antioxidant levels, so try and buy unrefined where you can.
However, some people prefer to use refined shea as the unrefined version can have a rather distinctive aroma. I will always use unrefined and choose my essential oils to compliment the aroma. I want to make the most of all of those glorious antioxidants!
For super duper top-quality products, seek those made by hand in indigenous communities in West Africa. They may cost more, but you do get an unsurpassed product.
Can I Use Fragrance Oils in Skin Salve With Essential Oils?
Yes, of course, you can use VINEVIDA Soaps and Candles fragrance oil in Skin Salve with essential oils.
You do need to bear in mind that fragrance oils do NOT have the same active properties and benefits that essential oils do. You are simply adding a product to make it smell nice.
It can be useful where you want a cooling scent like NO. 1112, Inspired By: Eucalyptus Spearmint By Bath & Body Works without the contraindications of the essential oils themselves.
You can happily combine both fragrance oil and essential oils in Skin Salve with essential oils. However, fragrance oils should not be used in Lip Salves and Balms.
Fragrance oils all have their own set of IFRA data, and they are pretty much always different from one to the next. Therefore, you need to check each one individually. We show you how, in How To Use Vinevida Oils.
Recipes for Skin Salve With Essential Oils
This is the exciting bit of Skin Salve with essential oils, the recipes! Now I have tried to give you variety in terms of uses and different kinds of bases for you to try.
You can swap and change the essential oils to suit but please note, that where you will use a Skin Salve with essential oils on a child, you must use the IFRA maximum safety dilution rate to suit your youngest child. The ‘Safety Synopsis’ file is the most convenient place to find this information.
If you are not sure how to find the ‘Safety Synopsis’ file or the IFRA safety data, this helpful blog article will show you - How To Find Safety Information On The VINEVIDA Website.
The equipment and the methods will be virtually identical for each Skin Salve with essential oils, just the recipe proportions will be slightly different.
You Will Need:
- Double boiler (You can use a heat-proof mason jar or a clean tin can in a saucepan of water)
- Weigh Scales
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Stainless steel spoon
- Silicone spatula (Good quality)
- 100 ml or 4 oz container
- Water and oil proof label
Optional:
- A preservative of your choice
- An Infrared thermometer
Method:
- The trick with your base ingredients, to conserve their qualities, is to heat them at a very low temperature and for as short a time as possible. As soon as something is molten, remove it from the heat.
- So, place your double boiler on low to medium heat and warm it through a little.
- Measure out all of your ingredients ready, so you can move quickly.
- Pop your wax into the double boiler and by all means stir to help it melt.
- If you are using cosmetic butter add it when the wax has half melted.
- As soon as the wax and/or cosmetic butter are molten, remove from the heat immediately and set aside for a few moments.
- After a couple of minutes, add your carrier oil(s).
- Then, once it has cooled a little more, add your fragrance and essential oils and stir. Ideally, you want to be adding essential oils once the mix reaches 125 F/ 51℃ or below. This helps to keep them at their optimal quality. This is where an infrared thermometer is invaluable.
- Stir well to thoroughly combine it all for at least a minute.
- Set your container onto a heatproof tray and pour the mix carefully into the vessel.
- Cover with a clean soft cloth and allow to cool and set fully before adding the lid. Waxes, especially emulsifying wax, are notorious for growing mold if they are lidded when warm and still moist. You can avoid this by allowing any wax to fully cool and set before sealing. You could also use a commercial preservative to mitigate this.
- Once set, lid tightly and label, listing all of the ingredients clearly for safety reasons.
OK, let's dive into the variations and get started!
Boo Boo Salve For Kids
This Skin Salve with essential oils for kids is great when they have the odd Boo Boo. Perfect for bumps, knicks, cuts, and grazes they seem to have so many of them when they are wee. If you have a household full of kids that are constantly in the wars, double the recipe.
Just before we begin, let's have a quick look at some safety data from an example of an essential oil’s ‘Safety Synopsis’ from the website. It says:
- 3% dilution for adults
- 2% for people in a weakened state
- 1% for children over the age of 6.
- 0.5% for any younger than that, and we do not recommend using essential oils on children under the age of 6 months unless it is an emergency.
These are general figures, each essential oil may be different, so you need to double-check if you plan to swap out any essential oils from this recipe.
If your youngest child is 3 years of age, you would work to a 0.5% dilution for the whole project, irrespective of the age of the older children. It has to be safe for your youngest child.

Cracked Skin Salve
This is one of the big hitters in terms of Skin Salve with essential oils. It’s packed with ingredients to hydrate, nourish, and ‘feed’ the skin. The essential oils all have properties renowned for skin healing or the knitting back together of the skin after a wound or injury. Helichrysum is always the essential oil to turn to when you have a wound that just will not heal. Cracked skin on your feet can be painful and persistent, try and break the cycle with this.
