We are closing the drapes earlier, and a fire crackles in the hearth. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to snuggle down with some peaceful, relaxing bedroom ideas.
Years ago, I used to teach Interior Design, and I taught my students to ask potential clients one simple question. ‘How do you want the room to make you feel?’ Their clients were invariably stumped, having never even given it a thought. But knowing that is fundamental in the design process.
Think about your own bedroom for a moment.
It should feel like a sanctuary. Somewhere special, you can unwind and let the day melt away.
There’s something so magical about walking into a room where your shoulders drop and your breathing slows, as you feel more relaxed and calm.
So…how does your bedroom make you feel, and would you like it to feel more peaceful and relaxing?
Creating The Perfect Canvas for Fragrance
You don’t need a big budget or an interior design degree to create a peaceful and relaxing bedroom. Simply focus on small, intentional choices that will bring you extra comfort.
This is where we need to look beyond just scent and venture into how things feel to us through touch and how things appear to us with both color and lighting.
Consider incorporating some of these ideas, too, to create the perfect place of sanctuary and calm serenity:
-
- Neutral color palette - stick to neutral colors, gentle grays, soft whites, muted sage, and warm beige tones to create an aura of calm.
- Soft, touchable bedding - Choose bed linen that allows you to breathe while you sleep and feels soft and inviting to the touch.
- Plush rugs - If you have hard floors, consider adding a plush rug to feel soft underfoot. Sheepskins, even synthetic ones, are ideal for this.
- Warm lighting - Turn off harsh overlight lights and opt for bedside lamps, dimmable bulbs, and even fairy lights. Choose ‘warm white’ LED bulbs over ‘white’, which tends to have a garish blue tone to it.
- Natural materials - organic materials seem to instill feelings of comfort, choose natural wooden furniture, woven rattan baskets, and linen mix drapes and cushions.
Whether you own or rent your room, these ideas are easy to employ wherever you are! They don’t have to cost the earth either, in terms of both money and sustainability. Search for second-hand furniture, drapes, and rugs, all of which are easy to restore and clean.
Bespoke Fragrance Appeal
The beauty of working with essential oils and fragrance oils is that you can create your own signature bedroom fragrance palette. You're simply using fragrances rather than paint colors to create a pleasing aromatic scentscape.
Create your own palette of fragrances that you can pick and choose from. Then you are able to design and create bespoke blends by simply mixing and blending oils from this palette, which reflect your mood and personality.
Remember that your idea of calm and cozy might not be everybody’s. I respond well to floral aromas like Rose Geranium and Lilacs, whereas my husband is more relaxed by resinous and woody aromas like Frankincense and Cedarwood. He doesn’t know (well, he might if he reads this), but I have a rollerball of those essential oils that I occasionally apply before bed to help him sleep better. Lying close to me, he too will breathe in the aroma. He does not need to apply the oil to his skin to have an effect. He said this morning he had the best night’s sleep for ages, funny that!
‘How do I want my bedroom to feel?’
Don’t forget to ask your significant other!
-
- Fresh And Airy? Want a coastal breeze effect? Choose Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Sage or NO. 81 - Ocean Whisper.
- Warm And Cozy? Like a woodfired cabin? Choose Cedarwood, Amyris, and Cinnamon or NO. 4209 - Inspired by: By The Fireplace by Maison Margiela.
- Floral Tranquility? Want to delve into a floral bouquet? Lavender, Rose, and Jasmine are timeless choices. If you fancy something more contemporary, try the delicious aroma of NO. 4600 - Inspired by: Eden Sparkling Lychee (Women) by Kayali.
- Woody And Earthy? Sink into the glorious depths of the earth with Vetiver, Patchouli, and Balsam Fir. I love the green and mossy balance of NO. 3110 - Inspired by: Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford.
Experiment with balancing blends based on both of your preferences and use this harmonious blend to make scented candles, sprays, and diffuser blends.
Fragrances that feel more like ‘you’ will make your bedroom feel even more special. This way, you will keep coming back to it as your own piece of heavenly sanctuary.
Diffuse Calm Into The Air

Fragrance diffusers and essential oil burners are one of the easiest ways to fill your space with gorgeous, relaxing fragrance, and VINEVIDA offers a great range of diffusers for you to choose from.
There are ultrasonic and cold air diffusers that release a fine mist of essential oils that gently infuse your bedroom with scent while adding a touch of humidity, making them ideal for dry climates or winter months.
If, like me, you love more of a luminous ambiance, fragrance, and essential oil burners and wax melts offer the same aromatic benefits, all with the delicious added glow of candlelight.
It’s so easy to choose or make your own diffuser and candle designs that complement the style and color of your décor. Ceramic and glass diffusers and scented candles blend beautifully into both modern and boho bedrooms.

Scented Candles
There is nothing quite so inviting as the flickering flame of a candle. Scented Candles offer immediate fragrance in a specific area, and you can move them around to your heart's content, making them extremely versatile. It’s really cost-effective to make your own.
Introduce relaxing base notes, essential oils like Amyris and Patchouli to get you out of your head and switch off your mind.
Maybe a little Vanilla to snuggle you into your sanctuary. We’ve got a few you could give a try at. How about NO. 79 - Vanilla Luxe fragrance oil and the sublime NO. 4500 - Inspired by: Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain, or if you’ve got a stinky teenage bedroom, you could go full force and use number NO. 70 - Vanilla Odor Eliminator.
TASH’S TOP TIP - When making scented candles, always make sure you have the right wick. Choose the wick based on your wax type and the size of your candle mold or glass. Explore more in How to Make Scented Candles.
Wax Melts
Wax melts are so simple to make, it’s daft! Simply pop a wax melt in the top of the burner, add a heat source, either electric or a tea light. Set one going about 30 minutes before you go to settle into bed to fill your room with lingering scents of peace and serenity.
Once you start making wax melts for yourself, it can be hard to stop because they are fun to make and are great for gifting too. Fancy giving it a go? Creative Uses of Fragrance Oils for Wax Melts.
TASH’S TOP TIP: Always make sure the wax melt burner is turned off or extinguished before you go to sleep.
Scented Sachets
Place into closets and drawers to scent bedclothes and bed linens. Maybe a little one under your pillow! If Lavender isn’t your thing, try a blend of Ylang Ylang and Vetiver essential oils or NO. 168 - Chamomile Tea fragrance oil.
Why not use some of your leftover wax melts to make Botanical Wax Sachets? We love with NO. 66 Roasted Pine Cone, but you can use any essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice.
TASH’S TOP TIPS:
-
- If you are making lavender bags, make sure you leave a little opening so you can pop in the odd refresher drop of oil when you need it.
- How about Carpet Cleansers, Furniture Polishes, and Surface Cleansers? Have you thought about making your own laundry detergent, softeners, and tumble dryer sheets, maybe?
- Just imagine your bed linen so carefully scented, layered that way. You deserve it, queen!
Natural Scents of Serenity
Essential oils are wonderful at helping you transition from the busy energy of the day to a luscious state of relaxation. There are lots of renowned essential oils, known for their calming properties, like Lavender and Chamomile.
Start with simplicity and use these essential oils in your bedroom, try them individually or blended for more potent effects:
-
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) - The absolute queen of calm. Widely used to promote better sleep and ease anxiety.
- Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis L.) - Gentle and comforting, soothes the worries of your mind.
- Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) - Wonderfully uplifting, yet soothing. Great for children and for clearing your mind.
- Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) - Brings sensual softness, ideal for evening relaxation and balancing the mind.
- Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) - Grounding and earthy, helps you feel safe and centered.
- Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) - Refreshing and invigorating. Useful for clearing the air and enlivening your senses in the morning.
- Vanilla Oleoresin (Vanilla planifolia) - Comforting and reassuring. Very useful to help people feel safe in their space, especially after trauma.
TASH’S TOP TIP: Dilute Lavender essential and Chamomile essential oils (3% in carrier oil for adults) in a roller ball and keep it by your bed to help you unwind naturally and get a good night's sleep.
