What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are blocks of scented wax toi heat indirectly. As they melt, these powerhouses of fragrance slowly release to scent your room for longer.

Fragrance them with essential oils or a wide range of high-quality fragrance oils, or you could make synergistic combinations of both, to give you the best of both worlds.

It is one of the fastest-growing hobby businesses of recent years, here in the UK. When you realize just how easy it is to make wax melts, I’m sure you’ll be jumping on the bandwagon.

The Benefits of Using Fragrance Oils For Wax Melts

Fragrance oils offer a quick, easy, and economical way to scent wax to make wax melts.

Vinevida soap and candle-making fragrance oils are SLS, SLES, paraben, and phthalate-free. Reduce your exposure to chemicals and toxins, with fragrance oils designed to be as safe as possible for you and all the family.

Fragrance oils for wax melts give you a wonderfully intense and resilient fragrance for long-lasting aromas. Then they can be remelted to add more fragrance oils to revitalize the scent. When the wax is finally exhausted, save all your old melts and make a candle from them. I save mine to wax sewing threads and zips and curtain rails to make them run smoothly.

The Best Fragrance Oils For Wax Melts

All VINEVIDA Soaps & candle fragrance oils can be used for wax melt projects.

Flashpoints

When shopping for fragrance oils for wax melts, make sure they are suitable for use with candle waxes and that the manufacturer supplies you with its flashpoint information.

Generally speaking, those with higher values will give a longer-lasting scent throw to your wax melt.

Those with lower values are lighter and more ethereal. They will not last quite as long.

You can however blend more fragrance oils together to pair light ones with another with a higher flashpoint. That can eke out that scent a little further.

What Effect Are You Trying To Create?

Knowing which are the best fragrance oils for wax melts depends on the effect you’re trying to create.

What Do I Need To Make Wax Melts

Honestly, you need very little to make wax melts, which is what makes them such a popular craft creation.

Wax

You can use most types of candle-making waxes to formulate wax melts. Many producers prefer soy wax because of the lovely creamy look it gives the wax melts, and it feels luxurious and high-end.

If you have paraffin wax or beeswax to hand, by all means, use that too.

All you need is a double boiler to heat your wax in and that can be as simple as a recycled tin can in a pan of water.

Read more about candle waxes suitable for wax melts here: How to Make Scented Candles.

Molds

It is worth investing in wax melt molds to take the guesswork out of how big they should be! They are inexpensive and a good investment. Your wax melts need to be just big enough to sit in the well of your aromatherapy diffuser. If you make them too big they will just drip over the edges.

TOP TIP: Pour water to just below the brim of your aroma diffuser and then pour into a measuring jug and note the volume of water. Reduce it by 10% and that dictates the volume of wax to use for your wax melt.

Containers & Packaging

You can buy wax melt packaging called ‘wax melt outers’ that double as molds too. Simply pour the wax in, let it set, and then close the lid and label. See an example here.

It is worth packaging your wax melts to keep them clean and fresh and it will also help to retain the scent.

Easy Peasy

Yeah…. That’s it! Wax and a double boiler to melt it in, fragrance oils for wax melts, molds and something to package them in, and a few labels. Simple isn’t it?

You can add color, glitter, crystals, dried flowers, and even tiny wax shapes if you wish.

Ingenuity

I see a lot of wax melts for sale locally and this weekend, I came across a small business selling in a garden center, and her wax melts really stopped me in my tracks. The lady had gone to the trouble to make tiny wax shapes like baby booties, wedding bells, birthday cakes, Christmas trees, and candy canes to decorate her wax melts. They really set her wax melts apart for the crowd.

A subtle coloring and dusting of glitter and she had the market sussed. Just while I stood there looking, two customers picked up a couple of routers each. Perfectly pitched and highly attractive and no doubt a resounding financial success too.

I also noticed because the decorations had some height to them, she had to make the wax melt shallower to accommodate the decoration and still fit in the wax melt outer. It was extremely clever, she reduced the overall volume of wax needed, and which would have also slashed her costs, but her products were so attractive no one would ever notice! Clever, clever, clever!

If you fancy selling your wares, consider how to set yourself apart in a competitive market.

How To Use Fragrance Oils For Wax Melts

Fragrance oils for wax melts are so easy to use, that I heartily encourage you to give this project a go. You are sure to be delighted with the results and wonder why you didn’t try it sooner. Careful though, it’s addictive!

I want to give you plenty of recipes to get your teeth into here, so I’m going to give you the basic wax melt method, followed by a good selection of fragrance oil blends to use in your wax melts.

IFRA Safety

Wax Melts fall into IFRA Category 12 which has no maximum safety restrictions.

This means that in 100ml of product, you can use as much soap and candle fragrance oil as you wish. But I would recommend going no higher than 10%.

You Will Need:

    • Pan stand/holder
    • Weigh scales
    • Double Boiler - Ideally one with a pouring lip.
    • Measuring jug
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Molds/Wax Melt Outers
    • Oil and waterproof labels

Ingredients:

100g of Wax Pellets of your choice, I recommend Soy Wax (Hydrogenated Soy Bean Oil)

5 - 10 ml of your choice of Soap & candle fragrance oils for wax melts

Optional:

    • Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's instructions on how much to use and when
    • Wax colorant- follow the individual manufacturer's instructions on how much to add and when, as they vary.
    • Glitter
    • Wax decorations
    • Crystal inclusions
    • Dried flowers

Safety:

    • Always protect your work surfaces from molten wax.
    • Never pour molten wax down your sink.
    • Wear heat-protective gloves.

Method:

Working Safely & Sensibly
    • Be sure to cover your workspace, newspaper is the ideal medium for this. Don’t skip this, because it is no fun spilling molten wax.
    • If your kitchen is carpeted, consider working somewhere else, as it’s a real pain to get set wax out of the carpet!  Alternatively, work in your sink and line it with several layers of newspaper. Take care not to allow ANY wax to go down the plughole, that’s worse than getting it in your carpet!
    • To help you work quickly and efficiently, take the time to prepare your ingredients and equipment. Have them close to hand and ready to go.
Melt The Wax
    • Set your double boiler, over low to medium heat, and allow it a few minutes to warm through.
    • The aim is to melt your wax low and slow, so take your time. Add your wax to the pan, stirring to break this up if necessary, but stick to the low and slow.
    • If you are not using a double boiler and have a tin can in a saucepan, take extra care not to scorch your wax, watch it carefully and stir often.
    • If you want to add a wax-based colorant, double-check the manufacturer's instructions, but now is probably the best time to add it.
    • As soon as the wax (and any colorant) are melted, separate the pan from the water and set aside on a pan stand to cool a little.
Adding Fragrance Oil and/or Essential Oil
    • Before you add your fragrance oils for wax melts or essential oils, the wax needs to cool a little. The sweet spot temperature to aim for is between 180-185F for soy wax. Naturally, an infrared thermometer comes into its own here, however, most of us will just have to wing it and guess.
    • Gently pour in the fragrance oil for wax melts and/or essential oils.
    • Stir the oils well for at least 2-3 minutes. The oils must be evenly distributed through the wax and trust me, it takes a lot longer than you think. Be patient and you’ll reap the rewards.
Molding The Wax Melts
    • The amount of wax melts you end up with, depends on the size of the mold you are using. Don’t be tempted to make them too big or your molten wax could be too voluminous for the well or dish on your aromatherapy burner. You only need a small amount of wax.
    • If you only have larger molds, simply fill them part way, this can work quite well with flower shapes, stars, and hearts.
    • Set your clean and dust-free molds on a level surface and pour your beautifully fragranced wax into your molds to a suitable level.
    • Simply place them on one side to set. Keep them clean and dust-free by covering them with a clean soft cloth, making sure the cloth does not touch the surface of the wax.
    • You can unmold your wax melts as soon as they are set, make sure you leave them to leave them to cool and set fully. This is vitally important if you are going to package them, it allows warm moisture to escape that may otherwise encourage the growth of mold and bacteria.
    • Only package the wax melts once they are totally cold and have cured a little.
    • If you are having a go at using wax melt outers, all you need to do is pour your wax in, to the level indicated. Again, cover it with a clean cloth, making sure it does not touch the wax. Once fully cooled and cured a little, shut the lid and apply the label before you forget what they are! It’s important to totally cool these before sealing them shut, otherwise, you risk the formation of bacteria and mold in the warm and damp environment it creates by shutting the lid and excluding the air.
Discarding Wax
    • Put your common sense pants on now and NEVER pour excess wax down the sink. It’s extremely likely it will simply set in the pipe and block it.
    • You should pour excess wax into a muffin case or paper towel and discard it in the household refuse. But only if you must!
    • I save bits of extra wax to wax curtain rails so my curtain runs smoothly, to loosen stiff zips, and condition my sewing thread!
    • Failing that, stick a wick in a jar and pour it in. Over time you will create a ‘Waste Candle’ that can be burnt up. You can always use leftover wax to make firelighters too if you have an open fire. There really is no need to waste anything here, work more sustainably if you can, and save, reuse or repurpose precious resources.
Curing Your Wax Melts
    • You have no doubt noticed that I mentioned your wax melt curing. You may be asking ‘Do they really need to’? Not particularly for personal use, you can use your wax melts immediately if you want to.
    • However, if you are planning to gift or sell your wax melts it is worth realizing that over time the wax melts will cure and mature a little. The fragrance improves through the curing process and becomes more intense. Curing can also help achieve a better throw of scent, which can only be a good thing!
Labeling - Good Practice
    • Be sure to ALWAYS label your wax melts.
    • I fully appreciate you arguing, “I know what they are”! However, how confident will you be in remembering that months from now? Double on the pressure of an ER doctor asking for the ingredients when your neighbor’s four-year-old ate it, thinking it was candy. At that point, labelling seems like a good idea. DO IT NOW!
    • I know a lot of you store your wax melts in a jar, so at the very least, pop the list of ingredients into the storage jar, so if you ever need to, you can just grab and go.
    • In these circumstances, it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Storing Your Wax Melts
    • It is preferable to store your labeled wax melts in an airtight container. Restricting the airflow will help preserve the fragrance.

How to Use:

    1. Find a level and stable place to set your fire/heat-proof candle plate and place your wax melt burner on top of it.

    2. Ensure the burner is out of reach of pets and children. Trust me when I remind you that rugs and carpet, wagging dog tails, and molten wax are not the best combination for relaxation and stress relief!

    3. The burner must be placed where it cannot be easily knocked over and out of the way of strong draughts.

    4. Just gauge the size of your wax melt, if it feels it is a tad too large, snap a bit off and save it for another time.

    5. Turn the wax melt burner on if it is electric, or ignite a tea light and let the burner pre-warm a little. Then carefully place the wax melt into the dedicated well to melt and become molten and infuse your room with a delicious scent.

    6. You must ensure that you never leave your wax melt burners and their candles burning unattended. It is a significant safety risk.

    7. How long your wax melts last is dependent on a few things, the quality of your wax and fragrance oils, and the humidity of your environment. A decent-quality wax melt can last several melts if not more. All you need to do is to replace it with fresh wax melt once the scent fades.

    8. Try not to waste the discarded wax melts, you can easily refresh them with the same fragrance oil, several times over in fact! If they have really had it, melt them down and make them into a candle and burn the wax down instead.
