Acne Kit With Essential Oils

An Acne Kit with essential oils might be on most mom’s wish lists this summer as kids become anxious about returning to school with a face full of angry acne. Maybe you’re an adult sufferer and need something ‘else’ to try. Approaching acne holistically and treating the causes, symptoms and psychological effects of acne with essential oils can be very effective. We can use essential oils that are good for the skin and the mind, like Bergamot, Mandarin and Patchouli.

Our Acne Kit focuses on good cleansing with a  delicate Sugar Scrub, superb Micellar Wash and a terrific Toner. Then we pile on the soft and gentle care with a mild moisturizer and a rich serum. All full of carrier and essential oils with active properties to target the acne at the root of the issue.

Introduction to Acne Kit With Essential Oils

Recognizing International Youth Day on the 12th August,  I have just written Practical Essential Oils For Today's Modern Youth and it highlighted a gap in our back catalog for a tutorial on products that support acne both in teenagers and adults. So here it is! An Acne Kit with essential oils.

There is still time before your kids go back to school to get them started on this skin care regime and hopefully contribute to having their skin much improved by the time the school bell signals the start of a new term.

No matter your age, there is something here to get you started on a journey using essential oils for acne or building upon it.

What Is Acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition which occurs when the hair follicles become blocked. They get blocked by excess sebum and dead skin cells.

One of the critical factors in the formation of acne is excess oil production.  Combine that with a cocktail of inflammation, hormones and bacteria, it’s acne waiting to happen. Poor diet, nutrient deficiencies and genetics also play their part.

No one really knows what causes acne. However, it is thought that most acne is triggered by hormones or stress. The onset of puberty usually coincides with the start of breakouts.

Diet and what you take into your body can also affect acne. For example, a diet that is high in fat, refined sugar, and dairy can contribute to the arrival of acne. I used to joke as a child that every Mars bar meant an extra zit for me.

Establishing a regular skincare routine incorporating an Acne Kit with essential oils, like Tea and Lavender, can help acne during this time. It can assist in preventing breakouts and help to stop the acne from becoming more inflamed or infected.

In Liz’s article Does Tea Tree Oil Help Acne? She goes deep into acne and explains the different types from pimples to papules. Understanding acne is the key to winning the fight against it. Get yourself swatted up!

Where Can I Get Acne On My Body?

Generally, acne affects the skin on the face, neck, chest, and back. It’s fairly rare- but not unheard of, to get acne elsewhere.

You can have what is called a ‘flare-up’ anywhere your skin has sebaceous glands. So, pretty much anywhere on your body, apart from the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.

Having an Acne Kit with essential oils on hand can be a gamechanger, to get on top of any acne flare up right away.

The Psychological Effects Of Acne

Acne can have a huge impact on the sufferer, affecting their confidence, self esteem and body image. Teenagers are the most likely to suffer acne and often are victims of bullying or teasing because of it.

The older the sufferer, the more distress it can have upon a person because they have not ‘grown out of it’ as expected. Having acne for many years can be a psychological grind and can even lead to experiencing acute anxiety and depression.

Often, when designing your Acne Kit with essential oils, it is worth considering how severe the acne is on the skin AND the depth of the psychological effects for that person. You can then add in essential oils that help with anxiety, uplift mood and build confidence. I would use Sweet Orange, Mandarin and Frankincense.

An Acne Kit with essential oils doesn’t just stop at the skin itself, it needs to go deeper and support the person on a mental, emotional and spiritual level as well.

The Importance Of Carrier Oils In An Acne Kit With Essential Oils

While on the surface it looks like excess oil is the cause of the problem in the first place. It could seem counterintuitive to use more oil when you are trying to reduce the appearance and instances of acne. Yet, oil can be part of the solution.

It would seem logical to apply something that would dry the skin and reduce the oil levels in our skin. But all that happens then,  is your skin dries out and your body produces more oil to counteract it. This is where we can use well chosen carrier oils to help. We can use them to unclog pores and remove any debris or bacteria that contribute to the formation of acne.

Using a combination of both carrier oil and essential oils can make for a very effective Acne Kit with essential oils. We can create products that are moisturizing, nourishing, and can reduce inflammation and soothe the symptoms of acne.

Find out more about which are the best carrier oils to use and why, in Liz’s informative article - Why Carrier Oils Are The Best Choice For Acne.

Understanding The Comedogenic Scale For Our Acne Kit With Essential Oils

The Comedogenic Scale is a rating scale that scientists developed to rate how likely ingredients will clog pores when used in a cosmetic product. Anyone susceptible to acne breakouts and blackheads should avoid highly comedogenic oils, as they likely cause recurring acne problems. However, people with drier skin might prefer a more emollient oil toward the middle of the scale.

The scale uses a numbering system of 0 to 5. A zero denotes that the ingredient won’t clog pores at all, all the way to 5, which indicates that it is highly likely to clog the pores. So for acne-prone skin, you want to stick with oils rated between 0 and 2.

The scale is as follows:

0 - won’t clog pores at all

1 - very low likelihood they will clog pores

2 - moderately low likelihood

3 - moderate likelihood

4 - relatively high likelihood

5 - high chance of clogging pores

Aromatherapy offers many treatment options for acne and pimples, and an excellent place to start is creating your own Acne Kit with essential oils. Choosing carrier oils and essential oils with a low comedogenic score.

The Comedogenic Scale Of Carrier Oils
0
Won’t clog pores at all
1
Very low likelihood they will clog pores
2

Acne Kit With Essentials Oil - Our Favorite Essential Oils

We do have a whole raft of favorite essential oils to turn to when it comes to dealing with acne.

Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea Tree has been used extensively by the First Nation people of Australia for centuries. It is their go-to plant for dealing wound care and acne.

It is my go-to as well, from insect bites, cat scratches and the odd hormonal pimple here and there. Tea tree essential oil is chock full of antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-bacterial terpenes, making it a mighty foe for germs, bacteria and fungus.

It is the essential oil you are most likely to find in natural based skincare in the treatment of acne. Simply because it is so effective.

Tea Tree oil can help to clear excess oil from the skin when used in a daily wash, lotion, toner, face mask, and weekly scrub. With antibacterial and antiseptic constituents, it is good at maintaining clean skin. Any oils that help with acne must be non-comedogenic. Tea Tree oil is a non-comedogenic essential oil.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

We’ve all heard of Lavender essential oil because it is so widely used. Back in the 80’s when acne struck, my mother continuously chased me with the Lavender bottle for about 4 years.

Like Tea Tree, Lavender has a myriad of active properties like antimicrobial and antiseptic,  thanks to its range of chemical constituents. Lavender is a wonderful soother to sore and inflamed skin. Used alongside Roman Chamomile, it would be my first choice to soothe acne related inflammation.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Bergamot Essential Oil (Citrus bergamia)

Bergamot essential oil is a perfect candidate for our Acne Kit With essential oils, but there is just one small issue. Its phototoxicity.

We do have to be considered about HOW we use it and when.

Bergamot essential oil adds brightness and clarity to the complexion, smoothes out wrinkles  and it is very astringent. The astringent qualities are great if you have oily skin. It works wonderfully in cleansers and particularly facial steams and masques.

Because of the phototoxicity we need to consider how and when we use it appropriately. Exposing ourselves to UV light after using Bergamot could cause skin rashes.

If you are planning to go on a sunbed or expose your skin to the sun, then you want to use dilutions of 0.4% and less in your products, to be on the safe side. If you want to use more, avoid day light exposure and use it at night instead. Alternatively buy an FCF version instead to completely eliminate the issue.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Not for use on children under the age of two years old.
    • Phototoxic - stick to dilutions 0.4% and below.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Anthemis nobilis L.)

Roman Chamomile essential oil is composed mainly of esters. Esters are skin healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming. Here they are the magical constituents and they bring soothing and cooling qualities, which can be a Godsend in an acne flare up.

Roman Chamomile is a super gentle essential oil and one that I would choose for anything that feels sore or looks inflamed.

It’s also wonderful for soothing fractious feelings and anxieties too. Making it perfect for people whose acne is getting them down. Give this a whirl and you are sure to see a difference in your mood and outlook.

Learn more about Roman Chamomile here: Nature’s Most Soothing Gift: Roman Chamomile Essential Oil.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Grapefruit Essential Oil (Citrus paradisi)

I’m not quite sure where this idea was formulated in my experience of using Grapefruit, but I always think of it as the ‘Street Sweeper’ essential oil. Odd, I am aware!

It has the ability to clean and cleanse the skin and remove that dirt and debris that your skin collects over the day. It also has potential antibacterial properties to boot. Not to mention all those incredible antioxidant effects.

It is very popular in skincare, especially those that target Acne, Cellulite, Stretch Marks, And Oily Skin, because of the oil’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and those potential antibacterial properties.

I love the  fresh brightness it can bring to a blend and it is something that I like to use a great deal on my own skin. It’s very own ‘Street Sweeper’ diligently sweeping things clean and refreshing everything up nicely.

Safety Note - Another Cold Pressed essential oil with phototoxic properties, use with caution in the sun.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy
    • Not suitable for use for people who have platelet disorders or are on blood thinning medication. It is suggested you cease use of grapefruit essential oil 48 hours before any planned surgery
    • Phototoxic - stick to dilutions 3% and below and only use in an evening. Do not expose the skin to direct sunlight (or sunbeds) for at least 12 hours.

Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata)

There is just something so wonderful about using Mandarin with young people. It has that bright effervescence and joy that only kids can bring to a situation. Beautifully uplifting and soothing all at once.

For teens with acne and associated anxiety, Mandarin essential oil can be a welcome panacea with its antiseptic and sedative actions. It’s a wonderful choice for acne associated with oily skin and is also good at dealing with the scars that acne can leave. It also has wonderful benefits for those feeling anxious and depressed with its cheering and uplifting spirit.

It’s a great choice where there is both acne AND anxiety.

Like Grapefruit it is another of my favorite ‘cleanser-type’ essential oils. I use it a lot in cleansers and toners for cleaning the skin of dirt, daily grime, excess oil and sebum and to kick bacteria into touch.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Phototoxic - stick to dilutions 3% and below, and only use in an evening. Do not expose the skin to direct sunlight (or sunbeds) for at least 12 hours.

Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)

I really love Patchouli in skincare. Especially my own in the winter, when my skin goes dry and itchy. I find as soon as artificial heating kicks in, my skin dries out and this is my go to essential oil the moment that happens!

Patchouli essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties which help reduce redness and irritations, soothing dry and irritated skin. It can be helpful in managing acne that is more on the  dry side due to its soothing and moisturizing properties.

Orchard (2018)  concluded that Patchouli essential oil had ‘the most noteworthy antimicrobial activity’ against the two pathogens responsible for acne. Therefore, it could be used in the prevention of acne flare ups and for acne skincare and maintenance.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

An Honorable Mention:

Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum grandiflorum)

I’ll be honest, acne lasted well into my twenties and that is when I discovered Jasmine Absolute’s almost magical ability with healing scars.

I had a few small acne scars around my chin and I used this religiously for about two and a half years. I diluted it in carrier oil and just applied it into my scarred skin 2-3 times a week. Now, not a scar to be seen.

I can’t recommend it highly enough for scarring of any kind. Please wait until any wound is fully healed before beginning a regime.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use in dilutions of 0.60% or less.

Tamanu Carrier Oil

This carrier oil is currently getting a lot of attention and there are new research papers popping up extolling its virtues.

Tamanu carrier oil helps to make collagen and other components of the tissue of your skin. Not only does it possess impressive wound healing abilities, it is reported that it can also help reduce scars.

Personally, it is something I use relatively extensively in wound care and can attest to its healing abilities. There certainly appears to be more improved scar healing with less redness and reduced skin prominence. Scars appear to fade much faster as well.

Check These Out Too For Your Acne Kit With Essential Oils

Nurzyńska-Wierdak (2023) conducted research and concluded that ‘The essential oils listed in the review: tea tree, eucalyptus, myrtle, lavender, oregano, thyme, and lemon, meet these requirements and can be recommended as anti-acne agents’. Therefore, please do consider these as options as well and do some extra research on them.

How To Make An Acne Kit With Essential Oils

What To Put In My Acne Kit With Essential Oils?

To design the perfect Acne Kit with essential oils we want a range of products to serve our differing needs from general skin care and maintenance to dealing with flare ups.

It’s important that we clean our skin thoroughly and remove all the dirt, daily grease and grime and any build up of bacteria. Face Scrubs and Washes, Cleansers and Steam Baths are perfect to get our pores open and release all that yuk.

I also advocate heartily here for a clay masque as part of your process, preferably one with Bentonite Clay and French Green Clay. They have been my saviors over the years.

Then we need to close those pores up a little and this is where Astringents and Toners are ideal for this.

Then we need to add moisture and  nourishment to your skin. Dare I say, we also need to add in a carrier oil too. Serums are the perfect delivery method here.

Then if your skin is feeling particularly dry and irritated you could add in a richer nourishing cream.

It is my aim to keep this as cost effective as possible, but once you have bought your initial ingredients, you can continue making your Acne Kit with essential oils for as long as you need it. No doubt, as soon as people start to see the results, you’ll have orders flooding in too.

Right, let's get to the fun part!

Our Favorite Recipes For An Acne Kit With Essential Oils

Note: You can add appropriate preservatives to these recipes if you wish to, the choice is ultimately yours to make. Follow the individual manufacturer instructions as they vary from one product to another.

Here you will find our brand new and exciting professional recipes for Face Scrub, Micellar Cleansing Wash, Clay Masque, Toner, Moisturizer and Serum for your Acne Kit with essential oils. Designed just for you.

Face Scrub For Your Acne Kit With Essential Oils

You need to stick to sugar scrubs rather than salt scrubs when you have acne to contend with. They can be less harsh than salt scrub and are more gentle on the skin. However, you can add a small amount of very fine salt occasionally.

You can swap Tamanu out for Jojoba carrier oil if you wish, but I prefer the qualities of Tamanu for this purpose.

You Will Need:
    • Non-reactive mixing bowl
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Jar with a non-reactive lid - Glass preserving jars with rubber seals are perfect.
    • Label
Ingredients:
Method:
    1. In a mixing bowl, combine ¼ cup of Soft Brown Sugar with ¼ cup of Tamanu carrier oil and the Rosehip carrier oil.
    2. Mix thoroughly with a spoon, ensuring all the salt is finely covered in the oil.
    3. Once combined, carefully add your drops of essential oils, and then thoroughly mix and combine again.
    4. Decant into the jar and add the lid tightly.
    5. Label clearly with all ingredients for safety considerations.
    6. This recipe will store for at least six months if kept in the dark at a consistent and ambient temperature. The only thing that will go 'off' is if the carrier oil turns rancid, which you will smell as soon as you open the jar. If that happens, simply discard and make a new batch.
    7. Do a 24-48 hr patch test before using it.
Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Grapefruit specific - Not suitable for use for people who have platelet disorders or are on blood thinning medication. It is suggested you cease use of grapefruit essential oil 48 hours before any planned surgery
    • Always carry out a 24-48 hour patch test before using for the first time.

How To Use:
    • Work very gently in upward circular motions into damp skin to exfoliate the skin. Wash off with a clean, soft, face cloth with warm water.

Micellar Cleansing Wash For Your Acne Kit With Essential Oils

You Will Need:
    1. Measuring jug, cups and spoons
    2. Funnel
    3. 100ml Dark amber glass bottle
    4. Label
Ingredients:
Method:
    1. Carefully measure out all of the liquid ingredients and combine them together in a measuring jug
    2. Add the essential oils and mix thoroughly
    3. Using a funnel decant into a dark amber glass bottle
    4. Label clearly with all ingredients for safety considerations.
    5. Store in a cool place.
How To Use:
    1. Shake your bottle really well and pour a bit of micellar water onto your cotton cloth or pad.
    2. Gently smooth the soaked cotton around your eyes, lips, and face. Be gentle with your skin though, there’s no need to rub or tug on your skin.
    3. Let your skin air dry, there is no need to rinse with this product,
    4. Avoid getting the product in your eyes. If you do, rinse immediately with clean, tepid water. Should irritation persist, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

Clay Masque For Your Acne Kit With Essential Oils

I swear by clay masques for those suffering from acne. It used to be my saving grace and still is, for hormonal spots and pimples.

Get Bentonite Clay and French Clay if you can, but you can also use Kaolin, Rhassoul and French Pink if that is what you have to hand.

You can just fill a jar with a mixture of the clays and mix it with Spring Water when you are ready to use it. In using it, you find that you never quite need as much clay as you think you do either, so it lasts really well too.

Don’t use metal spoons or equipment with Bentonite clays as it reacts with the ions that you need for it to pull the crap out of your skin and detoxify it. Bentonite has INCREDIBLE properties and makes for fascinating research.

You Will Need:
    • A non metal bowl
    • A non metal spoon - wooden or bamboo is fine.
    • A non metal jar funnel
    • A 7 oz glass jar with a plastic lid. (Avoid a metal lid)
Ingredients:
Method:
    1. Mix all of the clays together in the bowl
    2. Add the drops of essential oil, but spread them out and work them well into the clays so that they don’t all clump in one spot, distribute them well through the clay.
    3. Decant, using a jar funnel into the glass jar. Lid tightly to reduce chances of moisture getting in.
    4. Label clearly listing all ingredients.
Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Always carry out a 24-48 hour patch test before using for the first time.
How To Use:
    1. Make sure you do a patch test first by applying some of the product to your inner elbow and observing over a 24-48 hour period.
    2. Take about 1 full teaspoon of clay from the jar and put it into a non-metallic bowl
    3. With a wooden spoon, work in a small amount of Spring Water until it forms a slack paste.
    4. Apply to your face, avoiding the eye area and let dry for at least 15 minutes. (It is not unusual to experience a little heat during this stage, it is perfectly normal and it is unlikely your skin is reacting - if it feels like it is burning, then wash it off immediately)
    5. Once dry, leave for a few minutes more and rinse off with clean warm water and a soft face cloth.
    6. Carefully remove all traces and marvel at what it does for your skin. You look great, right?

Toner For Your Acne Kit With Essential Oils

There is nothing quite like a GOOD toner. It should be refreshing, but you should also be able to feel it working, closing up those pores and tightening and firming the skin.

This is an important step in skincare, if all your pores are left wide open, they absorb more dirt and grime and it gives chances for bacteria to get a foothold. This can contribute to blocked pores and increased likelihood of your acne getting worse.

Don’t skip this step - it’s an important one.

You Will Need:
    1. Measuring jug, cups and spoons
    2. Funnel
    3. 100ml Dark amber glass bottle
    4. Label
Ingredients:
Method:
    1. Carefully measure out all of the liquid ingredients and combine them together in a measuring jug
    2. Add the essential oils and mix thoroughly
    3. Using a funnel decant into a dark amber glass bottle
    4. Label clearly with all ingredients for safety considerations.
    5. Store in a cool place.
How To Use:
    1. Shake your bottle really well and pour a bit of toner onto a clean cotton cloth or pad.
    2. Gently smooth the soaked cotton around your eyes, lips, and face. Be gentle with your skin.
    3. Let your skin air dry, there is no need to rinse with this product,
    4. Avoid getting the product in your eyes. If you do, rinse immediately with clean, tepid water. Should irritation persist, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

The Final Word

If your teens are anxious about going back to school because of their acne, get yourself making this Acne Kit with essential oils right away. There is still time to make a marked difference before the school bell chimes the new term in.

Whatever age you are, acne can be a soul destroying condition. It’s important to remember to support not only the skin, but also the mental and emotional aspects of living with acne. I remember it all too well, all these years later.

Use essential oils like Mandarin and Bergamot to uplift, soothe and calm anxieties.  Alongside the skin protectors of Lavender and Tea Tree. Use those super soothing properties of Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Patchouli if things are feeling a bit angry, red and sore. Let these essential oils support you on your journey towards managing your acne.

It’s possible to really make a difference to living with acne using aromatherapy and essential oils.

Keeping your skin clean, but not stripped of life, is key. Using gentle and more natural products to support the skin more readily.

Some commercial preparations are too strong and strip all the oils out of your skin. If you remember that’s the last thing you want because your skin will produce more sebum and oil as a response!

Get it thoroughly clean and open those pores up with clay masques to drag all the yucky stuff out. Then use a great natural toner to close the pores back up. Remember the importance of this step and try not to skip it!

This moisturizer recipe above is beautifully light and absorbs into the skin quickly leaving virtually no residue. Add another layer of nourishment, a couple of times a week, with the decadent serum in our Acne Kit with essential oils.
