Why Are Essential Oils for Lips So Fab?

I could wax lyrical about all the reasons why it’s great to make a Plump Up And Pout Lip Care Kit. There are a myriad of great reasons to give it a go, here are just a few.

Plumptious, Kissable Lips

Often, it is one of the most neglected parts of our skin care regime and our lips, next to our eyes are what people focus on when we are speaking to them. When someone is about to kiss you, they often have a lingering look at your lips first. Movies use this trick so you just know ‘The Kiss’ is about to happen.

When you have someone special taking that lingering look at your lips you want them to appear plumptious, luscious and desirable. Taking care of your smile  with nourishing essential oils for lips is going to give your lips the best makeover they ever had. Get them in tip top shape for National Kiss and Make Up Day.

Bye Bye Harsh Chemicals. Hello Kindly Essential Oils for Lips

You know me well enough by now, to know that I am always going to advocate for ditching unnecessary chemicals in skincare. Thereby, reducing our exposure to the plethora of toxic chemicals and ingredients.

When we put things on our lips, the chances of us ingesting the ingredients of those products is exceptionally high. That is why I have focused on ingredients that are as natural as possible. Products like Beeswax, Avocado oil and extra virgin Coconut oil feature highly in my own personal lip care because I don’t mind ingesting them at all. I cook with two of them!

Cosmetic Control

Your control does not have to stop at essential oils for lip nourishing, you can make a foray into the cosmetic world very easily as well.

You can make great lip tints and lip glosses with natural colors like alkanet, beetroot powder and cocoa. Have a look, below, at the recipe for the Lip Plumper Perfection, you can use the same base to make a tinted Lip Gloss. Just swap the essential oils for something more soothing.

I make a lip tint very much like I would a waxy lip balm, erring on the side of using more wax than carrier oil to create a firmer finish. This firmer finish stays on the lips longer and needs less application throughout the day. Make sure you use a carrier oil like Jojoba or Argan that has super duper moisturizing properties, as it can feel a little drying otherwise.

You can buy organic and natural cosmetic colors and mica powders if you want to add some extra shimmer to your essential oils for lips tints and glosses

Budget Friendly Choices

I stood in a well known British high street pharmacy store just yesterday. While standing in the queue I was stood by a promotional stand full of lip care and skincare products and the prices ASTOUNDED me. Bearing in mind, I exceptionally rarely buy these kinds of products for myself and so am not up on current pricing as a norm, but I was shocked, to say the least.

Here are a Few Examples of the Prices:

(Converted from £GBP to $USD, hence odd totals)

    • Very Basic Lip Balm Stick - $5.69
    • Tinted Lip Gloss - $24.03
    • Lip Plumper - $44.27
    • Lip Balm Kit with a basic Salve and a Balm -  $37.95

I nearly fell over!!!

The recipes in this article are designed to be budget friendly, cost effective and accessible for most people. They cost far less to make than buying any of those things above.

The cost for the most part is in the essential oils that you choose to use. Often in my articles, I will give you alternatives for the most cost effective essential oils where I am able. Such as swapping Rose essential oil out for Rose Geranium and Sandalwood Mysore out for Sandalwood Amyris. Get to know your essential oils and take note of what can be useful and budget friendly alternatives.

You CAN make your own really lovely, deeply nourishing, and dare I say decadent products on a small budget. Buy savvily and do price comparison research. Make the most of local producers, especially for Beeswax.

One Stop Shopping

Buying a range of oils and ingredients from one reputable company can also reduce expensive shipping costs. VINEVIDA can often act like a One Stop Shop for essential oils, carrier oils, fragrances and cosmetic butters like Shea.

I really advocate using a One Stop Shop policy, when it is cost effective to do so. Always consider your postage costs and if you are really saving by shopping around, or not?

If the company does not stock something that you want, always drop them a call or an email and let them know. It could actually be in their back store or they could order it for you and add it to your order.

Get to know your favorite essential oil supply company and communicate your needs. After all, how can they help you if they don’t know what you want or need?

Treat Yourself

We don’t need a National Kiss and Make Up Day, or even a partner, to be able to give our lips a little affection and self care.

Treat yourself with essential oils for lips and the rest of your complexion. Take some quiet time for yourself and repay your mouth for all the great service it does you.

If you are feeling a bit low or a bit down on life, treat yourself to some Rose essential oil. Harness all of the wonderful properties of this wonderful essential oil. Let it feed your skin, but also uplift you, comfort you and nourish your soul from within.

Choose essential oils that don’t just suit your skin, but also that suit your mood.

Talking of beautiful things, let’s get to essential oils for lips

Our Favorite Essential Oils For Lips

Remember that when you choose an essential oil for its fragrance, it might smell tremendous but taste foul. I have done this myself with essential oil blends; I presumed, because it smelled fantastic, that it would be ok. One of them was, in fact, utterly horrid.

I am not advocating tasting your essential oils; do NOT do this. They are not all safe for ingestion. Check out other lip based recipes from trusted aromatherapy professionals and see what they are using; you can consider it tried and tested when you see an essential oil popping up repeatedly.

Essential oils from the mint family or citrus essential oils are usually what first come to mind, but some of these can be quite drying to the skin, so they need careful balancing and thoughtful inclusion.

Rose Otto Essential Oil (Rosa Damascena)

Rose Otto essential oil is a profound experience at any time, instantly transporting you to floral heaven. It is an excellent oil to make you feel better about yourself, connecting you to love, compassion, and confidence. Rose is like a hug from the angel of the British Summer garden. It is deeply nourishing on your lips and one of the best skin food your money can buy. A little goes a very long way and is a worthwhile investment.

Melissa Essential Oil (Melissa Officinalis)

Melissa is the second hug from that angel of the British Summer Garden. Melissa comes from the lemon or bee balm plant and is beloved in our families' households for its excellent properties and wonderful fragrance.

According to Davies (1988) in A-Z of aromatherapy, "Melissa in low concentrations is a precious oil indeed in treating eczema and other skin problems. I find it can heal skin contusions, like chapped lips, very nicely".

Melissa can also be used in lip balms for cold sores, alongside other essential oils like Helichrysum and Eucalyptus. In a research study by Schnitzler (2008) it was concluded that “Melissa officinalis oil might be suitable for topical treatment of herpetic infections”.

Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium asperum var Roseum)

Rose Geranium essential oil is also one of my favorites for fragrance; now you have to ensure you are not too heavy-handed because if you put too much, it will smell amazing but not taste so great. I learnt by making this mistake, can you tell?

It is another essential oil with a long history of being used for various skin conditions. It is a beautifully soothing oil that can help elevate your mood and make you feel a bit brighter.

My friend used to keep a tin of my Rose and Rose Geranium Lip Balm in her handbag, and she would get it out and put a dab under her nose if someone a bit stinky got on the bus and was a bit too close. It is a dual purpose, for sure!

Sweet Orange Essential Oil (Citrus Sinensis L)

Sweet Orange essential oil makes for a beautiful lip balm, but you do need to watch how much you add as you don't want to contribute to drying your delicate lip skin any further than it already is. Keep the ratio to about 1.5% of the total volume.

Its bright and uplifting aroma can transport you to another place. Maybe to the hills of Southern Spain, where you can pluck an orange straight from the tree. Wherever you go in your mind, you are sure to find yourself calmer and uplifted.

Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber Officinale)

Ginger essential oil is one of my favorite pairings with Sweet Orange essential oil. Ginger has a deeply warming sensation, and Sweet Orange offers an enlivening and uplifting aroma.

Ginger also pairs well with many other essential oils and stands beside the florals, lending a deliciously spicy, deeper layer to the fragrance. It doesn't taste bad, either.

If your lips feel swollen and tight, ginger is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent for soothing, warming relief.

Our Favorite Ingredients To Use With Essential Oils for Lips

Shea Butter

Predominantly, shea butter is used for its moisturizing and protective qualities. It locks in moisture and smoothes the skin surface. It is beautiful for chapped, dry, sore skin

Creams rich in shea butter are lovely for chapped skin and cracked heels.

It melts at body temperature, instantly absorbing into the skin, adding valuable lipids to cell structure. If we think of skin cells as building bricks that are held together with mortar, that mortar is lipids - better known as fats. When the lipids break down, the skin becomes brittle and flaky. Shea butter acts like a mortar for the cells of your skin.

Shea Butter is rich in Stearic Acid which protects the skin's surface against water loss and fortifies its protective barrier. It is also rich in Linoleic acid which moisturizes and “plumps” the skin without weighing it down. Perfect for blending with essential oils for lips for that moist and delicious pout.

Beeswax

I have to confess that beeswax is one of my favorite ingredients to work with. It’s so versatile and brings that delicious honeyed fragrance to the mix. Beeswax has much more to offer than just a pleasant fragrance.

Beeswax forms a protective barrier over the surface of the skin. This protects your delicate skin from things like environmental irritants and harsh weather. It’s exceptional for being non-comedogenic, which means that it will not block your pores. It offers you that protective barrier while allowing the skin to breathe freely.

The protective barrier offered by beeswax protects from external air borne threats but it also locks in moisture. This helps prevent water loss, helping your skin stay soft and hydrated.

Beeswax brings fabulous skin softening, which enhances skin elasticity. This helps reduce the signs of aging.

Beeswax is highly beneficial for people who have acne-prone or sensitive skin because it has anti allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and germicidal effects.

This wide array of properties makes beeswax a highly stable base ingredient and helps to extend its shelf life. It also means that it is particularly beneficial for those with sensitive skin as beeswax will unlikely cause skin irritation.

I have very sensitive skin and I use it widely in my natural skincare with essential oils. I heartily recommend it to blend with essential oils for lips

Jojoba Carrier Oil

The astonishing thing about jojoba oil is its waxy composition is almost identical in texture to human sebum. Our skin secretes sebum to moisturize the skin and to create a barrier against infection from the outside world. Many of our skin issues happen because of some kind of disruption to this barrier. The waxy barrier protects the skin and so lends itself well to lips salves, balms and serums.

Jojoba oil is rich in fatty acids, which helps to make it so beneficial for lip and skin care.  It is full of oleic, lignoceric, and gondoic acids. These fatty acids are wonderful at providing great hydration for the skin.

If used on a regular basis and applied frequently it can really help to balance out dry and chapped lips, bringing hydration, suppleness and skin cell renewal and repair. Make it a repeating ingredient with your essential oils for lips.

Like any good skin care regime that is about regeneration and renewal, you want to remove the dead skin first. This Lip Scrub is designed to be super gentle and can be used when your skin is feeling a little bit delicate.

It is based on a mix of both sugar and salt, but if you often have broken or split skin* on or around your lips, just use very fine sugar because the salt will sting…even if it will encourage skin healing.

*Do be very careful of using any products if your skin is split or broken. Apart from the Lip Salvation Salve which can be used to encourage and facilitate healing.

You Will Need:

    • Small mixing bowl
    • Stainless steel stirrer or spoon
    • Jar funnel
    • 100gm Glass jar and close fitting lid
    • Label

    • 25g of fine Soft Brown Sugar
    • 25g of very fine Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Rock Salt (this must be pure and contain no anti-caking agents)
    • 50 ml of Jojoba Carrier Oil

NOTE: Use 50g of sugar and omit the salt if you have broken or particularly sore, delicate or sensitive skin.

Method:

    1. Weigh out both the sugar and salt into the mixing bowl. Remember to omit the salt if you have broken, sensitive or very delicate skin.
    2. Measure out the Jojoba carrier oil and pour into the sugar/salt mix.
    3. Stir well to combine.
    4. Add the essential oils by evenly distributing them around the bowl and stir to combine very thoroughly.
    5. Decant into a glass jar using a jar funnel and cap tightly.
    6. Label clearly with all ingredients for safety.

    4. Using clean warm water on a soft cloth, wash off gently, until all the product is removed.
    5. It is normal that it might feel slightly oily, that is ok.
    6. Apply once a week.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Do not use it on broken, split or irritated skin.

Luscious Essential Oils for Lips Serum

Once you have sloughed off all the stuff you don’t want. You now need to feed the delicate and newly exposed skin underneath and offer it some hydration and some extra protection.

Glycerine is a humectant which helps to attract and lock in moisture in your skin. The Jojoba oil offers that waxy like protective layer and the triglycerides in the coconut oil increases collagen supply. This plumps and firms skin cells and so is particularly useful for soft, kissable lips.

You Will Need:

    • Small measuring jug
    • Stainless steel stirrer or spoon
    • Funnel
    • 50ml Serum dispenser bottle
    • Label

Ingredients:

Method:

    1. Carefully measure and combine the Jojoba and Coconut MCT carrier oils.
    2. Add the Glycerine and mix thoroughly.
    3. Add the essential oil and stir well to combine.
    4. Decant into the bottle with a funnel and use a serum dispenser insert cap.
    5. Lid tightly.
    6. Labels clearly with all ingredients for safety. Add the instruction ‘Shake Well Before Use’.
    7. Do a 24-48 hour patch test on the inner elbow or wrist before using.

How to Use:

    1. Do a 24-48 hour patch test on the inner elbow or wrist before using.
    2. Shake well before every use.
    3. Apply 1-2 drops of serum and work into the lips in small circular motions.
    4. Massaging encourages blood flow and helps lips to appear plumper, rosy and utterly kissable. A Jade or crystal roller is perfect for this.
    5. Leave to absorb and do not wash off.
    6. Apply up to 2-3 times a week.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Budget Tip:

If the essential oils are not within reach of the budget, then simply use 9 drops of Rose Geranium instead. Note the Safety changes to: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Essential Oils for Lips Perfect Plumper

Now lip gloss and plumpers are not for everyone. Personally, I find a gloss too sticky for my liking and frankly attracts the very fine tiny cat hairs that abound in our house thanks to our long haired cat!

Plumpers, I do quite like, but maybe I’m just a sucker for that slightly stinging sensation. The price of beauty?

Well this price can be one worth paying for this homemade, all natural plumping lip gloss. For those soft, shiny, tempting lips. They won’t be able to take their eyes off them!

You can get plastic lip gloss dispensers online, get the ones that are squeezy and have the sloped applicator with the hole in the center. They are generally refillable so can be re-used many times over.

These make wonderful gifts but make sure that you label them with an adequate warning and that they are strictly for adult use only.

Again, these are easier to make in quantity, so you’ll have some to gift to family or friends.

You Will Need:

    • A double boiler (use a microwave on low if you do not have one)
    • Small measuring jug
    • Measuring spoons
    • Stainless steel stirrer or spoon
    • Funnel
    • 10ml Lip Gloss Tubes x 10
    • Label

Ingredients:

The Magic Ingredient:

4 drops of Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) - for that little extra oomph and plump, but I warn you it can come with an edge of heat and even a sting in her tail, but don’t all the best lip plumpers?

NOTE: Make sure you use Cinnamon LEAF and not Cinnamon BARK essential oil. The safety dilution rates are different and Cinnamon Bark essential oil is not recommended by IFRA for use in lip based products.

Also do NOT be tempted to add any more than 4 drops, that is right on the cusp of the safety limit. Resist the urge! Put the bottle down and step away!

Method:

    1. Carefully measure out all of your ingredients and have them to hand.
    2. Set the double boiler over a low to medium heat making sure the top pan does not touch the water in the pan below.
    3. Add the Beeswax, Extra Virgin Coconut carrier oil, and Shea Butter into the pan and allow it to gently melt over a very low heat. High heat can destroy some of the active properties of these ingredients, so take your time.
    4. Once completely melted, remove for the heat.
    5. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes and then add the essential oils stirring thoroughly to mix.
    6. Pour the mix into your lip gloss tubes and place the caps and lids
    7. Once fully cooled, label clearly with all ingredients for safety. Add an extra warning that the product can have a stinging or burning sensation.
    8. Do a 24-48 hour patch test on the inner elbow or wrist before using.

How to Use:

    1. Do a 24-48 hour patch test on the inner elbow or wrist before using.
    2. Apply from the dispenser over the lip area and purse your lips together to spread and even the appearance of the gloss.
    3. Enjoy the tingle.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • As with all essential oils for lips, do not use on split, irritated or broken skin.
    • Not suitable for children.
