Essential Oils for Endometriosis

The Office of Women’s Health estimates that 11% or 6.5 million women in the USA have Endometriosis. It is a painful and incurable condition that can affect fertility, so women across the world are finding new and natural ways to target symptoms like pain, cramps, and bloating.

Research shows chronic inflammation can contribute to and exacerbate Endometriosis. We can take charge of our condition by developing health protocols to reduce inflammation. Boosting and looking after our gut flora strengthens our immune system and should be the keystone of any natural treatment.

Utilizing essential oils for Endometriosis like Lavender, Rose, and Melissa can help us to find relief and balance living with this condition. In this article, we’re thinking about essential oils for Endometriosis.

This article is not written by someone who has just collected the facts and cobbled them together. It is penned by someone that lives with Endometriosis every single day.

I live with Endometriosis. For two and a half weeks each month, I suffer.

There’s an irony that last night, I suffered the worst pain from Endometriosis. It focused my mind on sharing helpful things and writing an article with genuinely tangible ideas and solutions.

Your symptoms might differ from mine, and you may experience them differently. That is why essential oils for Endometriosis are the perfect tool to design your natural healing regimen and protocol.

By understanding the condition and its symptoms, I will recommend essential oils for Endometriosis to alleviate those symptoms. More, I’ll include the essential oils that address the whole - the holistic mind, body, and spirit concept.

While there remains no cure for Endometriosis, that does not mean we cannot DO something.

This is a long article, so here is an outline of what I aim to cover.

What is Endometriosis

Endometriosis

The endometrium is the specialized tissue that makes up the womb's lining. In Endometriosis, this tissue grows outside of the womb. It can be found in other places, such as ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometrial lesions might also be found on the bladder and bowel and have even been found as far away as the brain, but thankfully, this is rare.

Consider that endometrial tissue responds to hormones. Just as the tissue thickens and sheds for menstruation, tissues outside the womb do the same. This is a very painful condition.

Adhesions form as a result of endometrial implants bleeding into the surrounding area. This causes inflammation and forms a band of tissue between two organs or the abdominal wall.

It is the localized inflammation associated with Endometriosis that is viewed as an important element in the formation of these adhesions.

Endometriosis does not discriminate. It affects women of all ages, including teenagers.

It's a long-term condition with pain, and its discomfort can significantly impact your life, your mental well-being, and your fertility.

For many women, the adverse effect on fertility is the hardest to come to terms with.

As yet, no cure has been found for Endometriosis. However, essential oils and other complementary treatments can help alleviate some of the symptoms.

Causes of Endometriosis

The cause of Endometriosis is not yet known.

Factors that may contribute are:

    • Hormonal imbalance.
    • Compromised immune health- endometrial cells spread through the body in the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
    • High levels of inflammation in the body.
    • Genetics – Endometriosis tends to run in families but affects people of certain ethnic groups more than others.

However, none of these theories fully explain why Endometriosis happens. A combination of different factors likely causes the condition.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

The symptoms of Endometriosis can vary widely from person to person, so it can be difficult to diagnose without surgical investigation accurately.

Common symptoms of Endometriosis are:

    • Pain in your lower tummy or back (pelvic pain) – usually worse during your period
    • Period pain and menstrual cramps that stops you from doing your normal activities
    • Pain during or after sex
    • Pain when peeing or pooping during your period and in the build-up
    • Feeling sick, constipation, diarrhea
    • Blood in your pee or poo during your period
    • Difficulty getting pregnant
    • Heavy periods

Some women with Endometriosis are badly affected, while others might not have noticeable symptoms. It can have a big impact on your life and for some women, may lead to depression. Consequently, when we talk about essential oils for Endometriosis, we can say they are for pain or mood.

The Stages of Endometriosis

The severity of Endometriosis depends on how far it has spread through the body and which organs are affected. Since Endometriosis appears in many different forms, with a wide variety of clinical presentations, a system is needed. To standardize diagnosis, treatment, and communication in the medical community, doctors use a four-stage system to classify the severity of Endometriosis.

What Can The Doctor Do for Endometriosis?

As stated, there is currently no cure for Endometriosis, but there are medical treatments that can help ease the symptoms.

These treatments include:

    • Taking painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol
    • Hormone medicines and contraceptives, including the combined pill, contraceptive patch, intrauterine system (IUS) commonly known as The Coil and contraceptive implant, and medicines called gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs
    • You may be offered surgery to cut away patches of endometriosis tissue, but this can often return, and sometimes, in less than a year
    • You may be offered more serious surgery to remove part or all of the organs affected by Endometriosis, such as surgery to remove part of your colon or womb, known as a hysterectomy.

Your doctor will discuss all of the allopathic options with you. Occasionally, they suggest delaying an initial treatment to see if your symptoms improve independently.

Try The Things Suggested By Your Doctor

When we heavily lean into alternative medicine it can be easy to dismiss what our doctor recommends and treat it with skepticism and suspicion. Yet some treatments your doctor can offer you can be very effective for many people.

For instance - I did not want the coil under any circumstances. I could not afford the risk of more weight gain, so I declined the offer. When I begged my OBGYN to help me because Endometriosis was stealing 3 weeks of every month of my life, she offered me a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist called Prostap.

(This may be marketed under a different name in the states. If so, ask the doctor about GnRH agonists.)

GnRH agonists temporarily stop your ovaries from functioning and prevent the body from making estrogen. It induces menopause. By temporarily reducing estrogen levels, fibroids or endometriotic deposits can shrink over time. It is not a permanent solution as you cannot take it over a long period.

IT WAS AMAZING; I got my life back. However, I had to stop taking it in the end and I had a good long while where my symptoms were reduced. They are now back with a vengeance after 18 months.

Potentially I might be able to go back on them now - but I need to talk to my OBGYN about that.

If you are offered something from your doctor, do your research, and make your mind up based upon wide reasoning and not just one person's experience or opinion. What is great for me might not be for you, and vice versa.

Recognizing Our Diet and Gut Health Matter

Chronic inflammation is one of the factors why endometriosis forms and then progresses. We can greatly reduce inflammation in our body through our diet.

Focusing on a highly alkaline, mostly plant-based diet will help to reduce even chronic inflammation in the body over time.

Learning about gut flora and how it is the seat of our immune system is something scientists are learning more about every day.

Plant-based diets are highly recommended, but there is some inclusion of certain meat and fish proteins in these diets too.

Dr. Micheal Moseley is right at the front of that cutting-edge approach to rebuilding our immune systems through our diet, I strongly recommend reading some of his work to help you understand the basics.

Diet

Interestingly, while the drug I find most useful suppresses estrogen, research also shows that increasing estrogen through diet can be helpful.

There is much research out there, but here’s one jam-packed with useful information. Endometriosis and Phytoestrogens: Friends or Foes?

Diet can hugely impact our well-being, and our gut health is intrinsic to the functioning of our immune system. By consuming and absorbing the right kinds of foods we can battle the inflammation directly contributing to the progression of Endometriosis.

Balan (21) cites:

The conventional treatment for Endometriosis is still limited and associated with side effects. For this reason, an increasing number of women search for alternative options, such as phytotherapy, which is a promising strategy for managing Endometriosis. Phytochemicals such as flavonoids or phenolic acids proved their beneficial effects by exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and pro-apoptotic functions.”

What do those words mean?

    • Immunomodulatory = A substance that stimulates or suppresses the immune system and may help the body fight cancer, infection, or other diseases.
    • Pro-apoptotic = promoting or causing apoptosis - the death of cells as a normal and controlled part of an organism's growth or development.

I make my herbal capsules with Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa).

Ilhan (2019) says “Cat’s claw,” is used to treat infections with inflammatory or oxidative stress and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Therefore, it might serve as a promising alternative for treating endometriosis”.

It is something that is easily done at home. Outside the initial outlay of a capsule filler, it costs very little.

I found this study very interesting and it gives you specific phytochemicals to target, such as Curcumin found in Turmeric and Epigallocatechin-3-gallate which is found in Green Tea - both can be highly beneficial to those living with Endometriosis. An Overview of the Conservative Management of Endometriosis from a Naturopathic Perspective: Phytochemicals and Medicinal Plants.

Do check any new herbal supplements with your medical practitioner before taking them.

Resveratrol

Another interesting compound is Resveratrol found in foods like grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and peanuts. Resveratrol has profound effects on pain levels and is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Constituents from other plants like Green Tea, Yarrow, and Garlic are all being researched in the fight against Endometriosis.

Manage The Pain

I learned this from a back injury. You don’t want to take the pain meds, and you don’t want to take them regularly. Sometimes, you have to.

My stepmother is having to learn this one. Her healthcare practitioner suggested she take pain meds proactively rather than reactively, and she was a little taken aback at the suggestion. He explained that her development of pain was stopping her from engaging in daily life. However, were she to treat the pain first, the results could be dramatically different from before she had it. And change her quality of life.

I know this and live this.

I wouldn't say I like it, but I do it because it helps.

If you are dealing with pain affecting your life's daily functioning, you need to think about managing it proactively rather than reactively. Discuss this with a prescribing pain specialist or your doctor and devise a suitable regimen.

You can also do the very same thing with essential oils for Endometriosis; use them before the pain starts, and during and after to control your condition. Make massage oils, quick-absorb lotions, and powerful diffuser blends.

Use relaxation, breathing, and yoga techniques to relieve menstrual pain, cramps, and discomfort.

Use hot water bottles, cold compresses, and hot salty baths to relieve stress.

Develop a wide range of effective pain solutions that work for you. Ones that you can turn to repeatedly when your pain varies and vacillates.

Get The Sleep Right

Even the most seasoned among us can have bad nights; I certainly did last night.

Yet, I could still try and help myself along the way. I inhaled essential oils, filled up my hot water bottle, rubbed in my magic cream laced with sweet soothing essential oils…and took anti-spasmodic with a cup of green Tea. I then went back to bed and slept.

Those soothing essential oils for Endometriosis in my blend are also conducive to helping me sleep because often my pain worsens the last thing at night.

You function better when you get decent sleep; it is as simple as that. Endometriosis can be utterly exhausting, day after day of excruciating pain and cramping and it feels like it goes on forever. Developing essential oil blends that encourage rest, relaxation, and a good night’s sleep is important.

This is a good time to practice meditation and relaxation and use breathing techniques to relax and wind you down.

I also found in previous years that Melatonin helped me regulate my sleep pattern when it had slipped into something ridiculous.

Look After Your Mental Well-being

My endometriosis symptoms start at ovulation. Then it builds and intensifies to a crescendo about 3-4 days before my period, and then it drops me like a brick on the third day of menstruation.

This is 17-18 days of the month spent enduring and fighting against the pain and challenges that Endometriosis brings.

By the time the glory of your period turns up, you are usually spent and on your knees.

Coming on is like a hallelujah moment in this house because it means I might find myself again after a couple of days. Finally, some respite.

But…. just when you’ve caught your breath and got back on track, you are back in it all over again.

It’s Easy to Withdraw

This is where your quality of life can take a serious dip; you might stop doing things because you are in pain or you are so tired you can’t muster the energy, enthusiasm, or motivation to do anything.

It can cause you to disengage and withdraw socially, especially if your friends and family have no understanding or sympathy towards the condition.

Friendships can fall away, leaving us feeling all the more isolated and upset about life with Endometriosis.

I have also noticed that many women with Endometriosis face challenges from other physical conditions and sometimes poor mental wellness.

Treat the Mind, Body Spirit

It is vitally important that we look at our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as our physical well-being.

Use essential oils for Endometriosis that support the whole - the holistic concept - like Palo Santo, Frankincense, and Rose Otto.

Connect with other people who are experiencing this condition and talk to others. Helping someone else can boost your mood and morale and contribute to positive self-worth.

Fertility - Do The Things You CAN

One of the most challenging and distressing aspects of Endometriosis can be its effect on our fertility levels.

For those who are endlessly trying to conceive, it can be quite soul-destroying and profoundly affects our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It is a time when we can be bought low, and it is important to connect with others who understand how we feel.

Shared experience and mutual understanding can offer you the kind of support you cannot get elsewhere. Talking to a stranger can be just as beneficial sometimes, so do not discount that. People used to offload me on the bus to work all the time. Be one of those people and try it out.

I will share with you a couple of my favorite Folklore tips too.

Bear in mind that they are folklore and old wives’ tales. Use your discretion here.

Birth Moon Phase

Folk wisdom says that the phase of the moon on the day you were born is when you are likely to conceive yourself.

I was born on a new moon, and all these years later, I had never looked at the phase of the moon when I conceived my son.

It was the last quarter of the moon cycle- so very close!

Find out what phase the moon was in when you were born.

Moonlight Regulator

Consider whether moonlight and light pollution might be a factor...

When removed from the effects of artificial lighting, women’s menstrual cycles tend to regulate the cycles of the moon... This can also happen when groups of women live together and are all attuned to the same cycle.

The ‘Red Tent’ is a relatively modern term describing structures set aside for menstruating women and girls. These structures have existed in various cultures for millennia.

No work would be expected of them, and for 3-5 days, they would meet to menstruate and share stories and their experiences. Often they would bring crafts to make while sitting and chatting. It was also a place where women would come to give birth with the support of other women.

These women were attuned to the moon's cycle, and you can do the same. Leave any artificial light off in your bedroom and leave your drapes open, so you are under the rays of the moon.

I’m lucky because I can see the moon from my bedroom window. Even if you cannot see it, you are still affected by the moonlight itself. Try it and note any changes in your cycle.

Note Your Cycle

It might sound tiresome and boring but keep a note of your endo symptoms and cycle.

It has only been through observing and noting my cycle that I have determined that 3-4 days before my period will be my worst day, and it is always worse every other month.

I can predict the days I will likely suffer the most and rearrange my diary accordingly. Using a pain diary can help you to define this more readily.

Being able to pre-warn your pals that you might have to let them down at the last minute when dates coincide with your ‘endo-zone .’It certainly makes you feel less guilty if and when that comes to pass.

Don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family for their observations, my husband is very acute at this and his insight always blows my mind. He knows me better than I know myself sometimes.

Your notes are a really useful tool that you can use to inform your medical care practitioner of your symptoms, the severity, the regularity, and how it affects your mental well-being.

I found this online tool to help you prepare for a medical appointment to define your symptoms more clearly. I thought it was very good and could help many of you, especially those at the start of their journey.

Essential Oils for Endometriosis

Targeting the Symptoms of Endometriosis With Essential Oils

By targeting the most debilitating or frustrating symptoms with essential oils for Endometriosis, you can grab control of your regimen and work to alleviate them for yourself.

In their 2021 study, Balan said, “Endometriosis is a complex gynecological disorder resulting from the interaction of various hormonal, immunological, and genetic factors. It is especially characterized by chronic inflammation. The local inflammatory response represents the main pathway for the initiation and progression of the disease”.

Chronic inflammation is related to the progression of Endometriosis, so we choose essential oils for Endometriosis with anti-inflammatory constituents.

Ihan (2019) states, “Since a large proportion of the body's immune system originates from the digestive tract, a healthy digestive system is essential for an effective immune system. A healthy gut and a healthy digestive system aid in producing good bacteria, enzymes, and vitamins that help fight diseases. Having a strong and vibrant immune system helps fight the original causes of endometriosis”.

Building up our healthy gut flora and, subsequently, our immune system is also key to living with Endometriosis and can help us slow the progression of this condition.

Essential oils for Endometriosis support healthy immune function to create a more diverse healing protocol.

Best Ways to Use Essential Oils for Endometriosis

We all experience endometriosis in different ways; therefore, keeping various approaches open to you can be highly beneficial.

Last night, I was in so much pain that even my husband's sympathetic touch became unbearable, as did the weight of my clothes.

Nerve and pain overload.

Interestingly, the studies have shown the possibility that endometrial lesions can cause nerve growth and for it to cluster at the site of the lesions/implants. This could be part of the reasoning behind why it hurts so darn much!

To calm myself, I inhaled Clary Sage and Rose Geranium.

I never had a period pain cramp until I had endometriosis. I used to wonder what all the fuss was about. Now I know all too well.

Sometimes, just the thought of going to the toilet is too much to bear. Cramps after having a wee or a poo can be so painful that I cannot move for up to 20-30 minutes afterward. I may need to lie down to help the cramps subside. Sometimes it's the only way to get relief.

I have an Endo Magic Cream laced with all those essential oils for endometriosis, like Vetiver, Frankincense, Ginger, Ylang Ylang, Melissa, and Marjoram I rub across my abdomen. You can find the recipe below.

This magic cream is used before and during these times to alleviate, soothe, relieve, calm, and relax.

Pain makes you tense, and your body stiffens. Use essential oils for endometriosis that encourage you to relax and release because this can help your pain level decrease. I consciously HAVE to do this when my pain levels are very acute.

I also use essential oils in the bath at night to help balance me through the month, and I add in a couple of extras as soon as ovulation(hell) kicks in.

Things to Try

  • If you have a bath, try out bath oils or salts. I prefer a mix of Pink Himalayan Rock Salt, Epsom Salt, and Magnesium Flakes. It helps me relax and soothes my skin which is always more prone to dryness at this part of my cycle.
  • The body lotion is great if you want to rub something indirectly. Although, consider keeping to a light fluid that is quickly and easily absorbed because if you are in a great deal of pain, rubbing it in might not feel like it helps.
  • Mix your essential oils for endometriosis blend with a carrier oil like Sweet Almond. It is light and easily absorbed into the skin.
  • Using room mists and essential oil diffusers is wonderful when you are in pain and need to calm yourself to encourage rest and relaxation. They can be useful at night to assist with your sleep, but ensure they have a cut-off timer and are not going all night.
  • I often turn to inhalation when my pain is most acute. Direct inhalation can work very quickly. Take Sweet Orange, for instance; its effect on lifting your mood is virtually immediate.
  • The good old hot water bottle! For pain relief at night, this is very helpful. Sometimes, I might slide a tissue with Lavender and Vetiver essential oils between the hot water bottle and the cover to help induce relaxation and a night of sound sleep.

What I Use Myself and My Accidental Discovery

I will share with you my regimen and my happy accident.

I introduced Vetiver to my nighttime routine after finding it did help with the duration and quality of my sleep, and after a few months, I said to my husband- ‘Hey, my cramps from endometriosis don’t seem so bad. I wonder why that is?

On reflection, it coincided with the introduction of Vetiver.

Vetiver has been used as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to relax the body and mind and to ease cramping. All of these qualities were working with the other essential oils to relieve me over the following months.

    The Final Word

I feel like we have been on a journey together! We have looked at the causes, symptoms, and stages of endometriosis and explored the treatments that our doctor might offer us and their limitations of those.

I am hoping that while you appreciate that there is no cure for endometriosis (yet), there is a whole range of things that you can do for yourself. Both target the progression of the condition and reduce the pain you're experiencing.

    Reduce Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a factor in the formation and progression of this debilitating condition. Targeting therapies at reducing that chronic inflammation makes sense, and we can use a variety of approaches, including essential oils for endometriosis, our diet, and plenty of phytoestrogens.

Focusing on your gut health and high-alkaline diets reduces inflammation and support and strengthen your immune system.

    Manage Pain

For women with endometriosis developing a range of pain relieving techniques and getting on top of proactive pain relief, and reducing menstrual cramps can be a game changer and offers you a chance to get some of that life back each month.

Managing your pain levels can help you get your sleep right and reduce tiredness.

    Prioritize Mental Wellness

Looking after your mental and emotional well-being is key here, even more so if you are experiencing infertility. Reach out to others experiencing the same. Your experience could help someone else too. Share what you are doing with others, just like I have here.

Don’t forget your spiritual well-being; connect with your faith and deep core values. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and chanting can help with all aspects of living with endometriosis.

    Use Essential Oils For Endometriosis

Create that multi-pronged approach and all-around healing protocol by targeting essential oils for endometriosis at your specific symptoms and for full mind and body spirit wellness.

Try the essential oil blends yourself and develop a routine that suits you. Use your notes to help you define your endo cycle and predict when to target your symptoms more aggressively.

    Research

There are some great medical studies and papers out there that can help deepen your understanding of endometriosis.

Also, do some reading on your gut flora and health; I highly recommend the work of Dr. Michael Moseley. Learn how it is the seat of our immune system and how a compromised immune system contributes to the formation and progression of endometriosis.

Learn about Phytoestrogens and how they can help treat your endometriosis for yourself. Including a few things in your diet, each week could help. Experiment and try things out for yourself. Keeping notes will help.

Whatever stage of endometriosis you are at, there is something here for you that will be useful. I hope you have enjoyed the article and found some wisdom in Learning to Live with Endometriosis and How Essential Oils Can Help.
