What are Fragrance Oils?

If you are creating candles, soaps, or wax melts, you may find fragrance oils more effective for your product. Made from natural ingredients, fragrance oils have a fixative to make them last longer and smell stronger. They are a wonderful option for diffusing if you are not interested in therapeutic properties of the essential oils and simply want to fragrance the room.

Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils

To fully understand the difference between the two, it helps to understand what an essential oil actually is.

A plant’s roots anchor it to the spot, which can mean it struggles with too much sun or not enough rain sometimes. It creates chemicals to help it cope. In addition, they make beautiful fragrances to evaporate into the air to seduce pollinators, or bitter ones to encourage insects not to eat their leaves.

So the first point is that the plant designed them to evaporate and so these fragrances dissipate relatively quickly. Great if you are a daffodil, but not so great if you are a candle whose beauty relies on its scent. Then you would want the aroma to last longer, and that’s when fragrance oils would be a better choice.

When we think of essential oils, many of us imagine we are inhaling a plant’s scent, but in many cases, that is only partially true. When essential oils are distilled, only chemicals that are oily travel through on the steam. Watery components may be left behind. This means that sometimes essential oils may not have the completeness you’d expect from certain plant’s smell.

Tips for Using Fragrance Oils

Many plants have a very small yield of essential oils which means certain ones can be prohibitively expensive, cutting profit margins. Fragrance oils are often a more cost-effective solution if you don’t want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on your project.

A rose candle made of essential oils will have therapeutic effects on mood and alter the atmosphere of your room. However, the fragrance will be extremely delicate, will dissipate very quickly, and will have to be priced very high to accommodate for the essential oil price. Using a fragrance oil will give you a strong-scented rose candle at a fraction of the price, but be clear that it will not have the same therapeutic skills of one made with essential oil.
