England's Summer

Midsummer is here.

Here in middle England, a stone's throw from the place of Shakespeare's birth, the countryside and gardens are in full bloom, and the air is fragrant with flowers everywhere.

Bees buzz about their business, and crickets and grasshoppers hum lazily from the lush grasslands up and down the country.

Birds are birthing and fledging their babies, and swallows from Africa bring their graceful swoops and dives to our skies.

The natural world is a buzz with the glory of Summer, and flowers burst forth with wild abundance.

The Flowers of A Midsummer's Night Dream

One of those most famous quotes, mentioning flowers from William Shakespeare's, A Midsummer Night's Dream, reads:

"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lulled in these flowers with dances and delight."

Shakespeare had a well-stocked garden at his home in Stratford, and he must have walked the country lanes around him, for he knew that Woodbines, better known in recent years as Honeysuckle and Eglantines or Wild Briar Roses festooned the hedgerows at this time, of year.

How lovely to think of how Titanic revealed so deeply in the fragrance of the wonderful flowers of the hedgerow that they lulled her to sleep right there in that green, leafy briar.

So, what can we do on this beautiful Midsummer's Eve to lull ourselves into a gorgeous relaxation or slumber to rival Titania's?

Come with me into the fragrant, flowering woods, and I will show you.
