There are three different mandarin oils, red, green and yellow mandarin essential oil. The essential oil comes from the rind of the fruit.
Mandarin essential oil originated in China and was originally grown only for royalty. A mandarin fruit requires a huge amount of nourishment to mature, so ensure that the fruit can get that, the tree is pared down to throw away more than half the fruit.
Rather than these being wasted, essential oil is made from the peel.
Green mandarin is the youngest, then the fruit turns yellow and finally, it goes to orange. So the most mature is red mandarin essential oil.
What’s notable is because some of the lipids are not as mature in the green mandarin, this essential oil is not phototoxic.
So is mandarin essential oil phototoxic?
Yes, if it is yellow or orange, but not if it's green mandarin essential oil.
Mandarin for Digestive
Mandarin essential oil is beautiful if you have indigestion or heartburn.
It’s a great essential oil to inhale if you feel nauseous. Perhaps you have morning sickness…?
Clearly since it comes from the orange, remember that it will be laxative too. So, if you are suffering from constipation or IBS it can be really helpful too.
It’s such an incredibly gentle oil, it is wonderful to use on children.
Mandarin Essential Oil for Pain
The pain-killing actions of mandarin essential oil are not really understood.
One constituent has been identified: Methyl-N-methyl anthranilate, which acts a little like methyl silicate. It interacts with the TRP receptors (Correa, 2015).
